The Excellency and Glory of Christ: As God

The excellency and glory of Christ as God is a central tenet of Christian theology, affirming His divine nature and eternal existence. This doctrine is foundational to understanding the person and work of Jesus Christ, as well as His role in the Godhead.

Divine Nature and Pre-existence

The Gospel of John opens with a profound declaration of Christ's divinity: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). This passage establishes the pre-existence of Christ, affirming that He is not a created being but has eternally existed with God and as God. The Word, identified as Christ, is the agent of creation: "Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made" (John 1:3).

Incarnation and Revelation

The incarnation of Christ is a pivotal event where the divine took on human form. John 1:14 states, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth" . This verse highlights the manifestation of divine glory in the person of Jesus, who reveals the Father to humanity. The incarnation is not a diminishment of His divinity but a demonstration of His willingness to enter into human history for the purpose of redemption.

Attributes of Divinity

Christ possesses attributes that are unique to God, underscoring His divine nature. He is omniscient, as seen in His knowledge of people's thoughts and hearts (John 2:24-25). He is omnipotent, demonstrated through His miracles, such as calming the storm (Mark 4:39) and raising the dead (John 11:43-44). His omnipresence is affirmed in His promise to be with His followers always (Matthew 28:20).

Worship and Honor

The worship of Christ is a testament to His divinity. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus receives worship that is due only to God. The Magi worship Him at His birth (Matthew 2:11), and after His resurrection, His disciples worship Him (Matthew 28:9, 17). In Revelation, the heavenly hosts proclaim, "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!" (Revelation 5:12). This worship is consistent with the understanding of Christ as God, deserving of all honor and glory.

Equality with the Father

Christ's equality with the Father is a recurring theme in the New Testament. In John 10:30, Jesus declares, "I and the Father are one" , affirming His unity and equality with God the Father. This statement, along with others, led to accusations of blasphemy from His contemporaries, who understood the implications of His claims (John 10:33).

Role in Salvation

The glory of Christ as God is also evident in His role in salvation. As the divine Savior, He possesses the authority to forgive sins, a prerogative of God alone (Mark 2:5-7). His sacrificial death and victorious resurrection are the means by which humanity is reconciled to God. Colossians 1:19-20 states, "For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things" .

Eternal Reign

The eternal reign of Christ further underscores His divine glory. He is described as the "King of kings and Lord of lords" (Revelation 19:16), ruling with authority over all creation. His kingdom is everlasting, and His dominion is without end, as prophesied in Daniel 7:14 and affirmed in the New Testament.

In summary, the excellency and glory of Christ as God are revealed through His divine nature, attributes, and works. His pre-existence, incarnation, and role in salvation highlight His unique position within the Trinity, deserving of worship and honor as the eternal Son of God.
