The Excellency and Glory of Christ: As the Blessed of God

The excellency and glory of Christ as the Blessed of God is a central theme in Christian theology, reflecting His divine nature, His role in salvation, and His unique position as the beloved Son of God. This entry explores the scriptural basis for understanding Christ's blessedness and glory, drawing from the Berean Standard Bible .

Divine Nature and Preeminence

Christ's excellency is rooted in His divine nature. As the Word made flesh, He embodies the fullness of God. John 1:14 states, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." This passage highlights the unique glory of Christ, which is inherent in His identity as the Son of God.

Colossians 1:15-19 further emphasizes His preeminence: "The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him."

Role in Salvation

Christ's glory is also manifested in His redemptive work. As the Blessed of God, He is the mediator of the New Covenant, bringing salvation to humanity. Ephesians 1:3-7 declares, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His presence. In love He predestined us for adoption as His sons through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the Beloved One. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace."

Unique Position as the Beloved Son

Christ's blessedness is further underscored by His unique relationship with the Father. At His baptism, a voice from heaven declared, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17). This divine affirmation is repeated at the Transfiguration, where the Father again proclaims, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!" (Matthew 17:5).

Exaltation and Eternal Glory

Following His resurrection and ascension, Christ is exalted to the right hand of God, a position of ultimate authority and glory. Philippians 2:9-11 states, "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Revelation 5:12-13 captures the eternal worship due to Christ: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing! And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying: 'To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power forever and ever!'"

In summary, the excellency and glory of Christ as the Blessed of God are foundational to understanding His divine nature, His salvific work, and His eternal reign. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Christ reveals the fullness of God's grace and truth, securing His place as the preeminent and beloved Son of God.
