The Excellency and Glory of Christ: As King

The kingship of Jesus Christ is a central theme in Christian theology, reflecting His divine authority, majesty, and sovereign rule over all creation. This kingship is not only a future hope but a present reality, as Christ reigns in the hearts of believers and over His Church. The Scriptures provide a rich tapestry of imagery and prophecy that reveal the excellency and glory of Christ as King.

Prophetic Foundations

The Old Testament lays the groundwork for understanding Christ's kingship. The prophet Isaiah foretells the coming of a divine ruler: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). This prophecy highlights the divine nature and eternal reign of the Messiah.

In the Psalms, the kingship of Christ is celebrated with vivid imagery. Psalm 2:6-7 declares, "I have installed My King on Zion, upon My holy mountain. I will proclaim the decree spoken to Me by the LORD: 'You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.'" This passage underscores the divine appointment and sonship of the King, affirming His authority and right to rule.

The Davidic Covenant

The promise of an everlasting kingdom is further solidified in the Davidic Covenant. God promises David, "Your house and kingdom will endure forever before Me, and your throne will be established forever" (2 Samuel 7:16). This covenant finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the Son of David, whose reign is eternal and unshakeable.

The New Testament Revelation

The New Testament reveals the fulfillment of these prophecies in the person of Jesus Christ. At His birth, the angel announces to Mary, "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end" (Luke 1:32-33). This declaration affirms Jesus as the promised King, whose reign is both present and eternal.

Jesus Himself testifies to His kingship during His earthly ministry. In John 18:36-37, He states, "My kingdom is not of this world... You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth." Here, Jesus distinguishes His kingdom from earthly realms, emphasizing its spiritual nature and divine origin.

The Exaltation of Christ

The resurrection and ascension of Christ mark His exaltation as King. Philippians 2:9-11 proclaims, "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." This passage highlights the universal recognition of Christ's authority and the ultimate submission of all creation to His rule.

The Reign of Christ

The Book of Revelation provides a vision of Christ's triumphant reign. Revelation 19:16 describes Him as "King of kings and Lord of lords," a title that signifies His supreme authority over all rulers and nations. His return is depicted as a time when He will establish His kingdom in its fullness, bringing justice and peace to the world.

The Present Reign

While the consummation of Christ's kingdom awaits His return, His reign is already manifest in the lives of believers. Colossians 1:13-14 states, "He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." Through faith, believers are transferred into Christ's kingdom, experiencing His rule and blessings in their lives.

The Glory of Christ's Kingship

The glory of Christ as King is reflected in His perfect justice, righteousness, and love. His reign is characterized by peace and truth, offering hope and salvation to all who submit to His authority. As King, Christ is the ultimate Shepherd, guiding and protecting His people, and the righteous Judge who will one day set all things right.

In summary, the excellency and glory of Christ as King are woven throughout the biblical narrative, revealing a divine ruler whose kingdom is both present and eternal, offering hope and redemption to a fallen world.
