| 1Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. | 1After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. |
| 2Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. | 2Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. |
| 3Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. | 3Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will also come with you." They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing. |
| 4At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. | 4But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. |
| 5He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. | 5So Jesus said to them, "Children, you do not have any fish, do you?" They answered Him, "No." |
| 6Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. | 6And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch." So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. |
| 7Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. | 7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord." So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. |
| 8The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. | 8But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish. |
| 9When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread. | 9So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread. |
| 10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. | 10Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have now caught." |
| 11So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn. | 11Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. |
| 12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. | 12Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples ventured to question Him, "Who are You?" knowing that it was the Lord. |
| 13Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. | 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. |
| 14This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead. | 14This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead. |
| 15After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? ” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. | 15So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My lambs." |
| 16Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. | 16He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Shepherd My sheep." |
| 17A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. | 17He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep. |
| 18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” | 18"Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go." |
| 19Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.” | 19Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me!" |
| 20Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” | 20Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?" |
| 21Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” | 21So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?" |
| 22Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.” | 22Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!" |
| 23So the rumor spread among the community of believers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that isn’t what Jesus said at all. He only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” | 23Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?" |
| 24This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here. And we know that his account of these things is accurate. | 24This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true. |
| 25Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written. | 25And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written. |
