New Living Translation | King James Bible |
One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat dinner in the home of a leader of the Pharisees, and the people were watching him closely. | 1And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. |
There was a man there whose arms and legs were swollen. | 2And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. |
Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in religious law, “Is it permitted in the law to heal people on the Sabbath day, or not?” | 3And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? |
When they refused to answer, Jesus touched the sick man and healed him and sent him away. | 4And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; |
Then he turned to them and said, “Which of you doesn’t work on the Sabbath? If your son or your cow falls into a pit, don’t you rush to get him out?” | 5And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? |
Again they could not answer. Jesus Teaches about Humility | 6And they could not answer him again to these things. |
When Jesus noticed that all who had come to the dinner were trying to sit in the seats of honor near the head of the table, he gave them this advice: | 7And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them, |
“When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been invited? | 8When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; |
The host will come and say, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then you will be embarrassed, and you will have to take whatever seat is left at the foot of the table! | 9And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. |
“Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. | 10But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. |
For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” | 11For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. |
Then he turned to his host. “When you put on a luncheon or a banquet,” he said, “don’t invite your friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors. For they will invite you back, and that will be your only reward. | 12Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. |
Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. | 13But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: |
Then at the resurrection of the righteous, God will reward you for inviting those who could not repay you.” Parable of the Great Feast | 14And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. |
Hearing this, a man sitting at the table with Jesus exclaimed, “What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God!” | 15And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. |
Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations. | 16Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: |
When the banquet was ready, he sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come, the banquet is ready.’ | 17And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. |
But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.’ | 18And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. |
Another said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen, and I want to try them out. Please excuse me.’ | 19And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. |
Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’ | 20And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. |
“The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was furious and said, ‘Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ | 21So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. |
After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ | 22And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. |
So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full. | 23And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. |
For none of those I first invited will get even the smallest taste of my banquet.’” The Cost of Being a Disciple | 24For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper. |
A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, | 25And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, |
“If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. | 26If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. |
And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. | 27And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. |
“But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? | 28For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? |
Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. | 29Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, |
They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’ | 30Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. |
“Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him? | 31Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? |
And if he can’t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away. | 32Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. |
So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own. | 33So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. |
“Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? | 34Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? |
Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!” | 35It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
