New Living Translation | King James Bible |
“Do you know when the wild goats give birth? Have you watched as deer are born in the wild? | 1Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve? |
Do you know how many months they carry their young? Are you aware of the time of their delivery? | 2Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth? |
They crouch down to give birth to their young and deliver their offspring. | 3They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows. |
Their young grow up in the open fields, then leave home and never return. | 4Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them. |
“Who gives the wild donkey its freedom? Who untied its ropes? | 5Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass? |
I have placed it in the wilderness; its home is the wasteland. | 6Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings. |
It hates the noise of the city and has no driver to shout at it. | 7He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver. |
The mountains are its pastureland, where it searches for every blade of grass. | 8The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing. |
“Will the wild ox consent to being tamed? Will it spend the night in your stall? | 9Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? |
Can you hitch a wild ox to a plow? Will it plow a field for you? | 10Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? |
Given its strength, can you trust it? Can you leave and trust the ox to do your work? | 11Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him? |
Can you rely on it to bring home your grain and deliver it to your threshing floor? | 12Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn? |
“The ostrich flaps her wings grandly, but they are no match for the feathers of the stork. | 13Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich? |
She lays her eggs on top of the earth, letting them be warmed in the dust. | 14Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust, |
She doesn’t worry that a foot might crush them or a wild animal might destroy them. | 15And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them. |
She is harsh toward her young, as if they were not her own. She doesn’t care if they die. | 16She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear; |
For God has deprived her of wisdom. He has given her no understanding. | 17Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding. |
But whenever she jumps up to run, she passes the swiftest horse with its rider. | 18What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider. |
“Have you given the horse its strength or clothed its neck with a flowing mane? | 19Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? |
Did you give it the ability to leap like a locust? Its majestic snorting is terrifying! | 20Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible. |
It paws the earth and rejoices in its strength when it charges out to battle. | 21He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men. |
It laughs at fear and is unafraid. It does not run from the sword. | 22He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword. |
The arrows rattle against it, and the spear and javelin flash. | 23The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield. |
It paws the ground fiercely and rushes forward into battle when the ram’s horn blows. | 24He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet. |
It snorts at the sound of the horn. It senses the battle in the distance. It quivers at the captain’s commands and the noise of battle. | 25He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting. |
“Is it your wisdom that makes the hawk soar and spread its wings toward the south? | 26Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south? |
Is it at your command that the eagle rises to the heights to make its nest? | 27Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high? |
It lives on the cliffs, making its home on a distant, rocky crag. | 28She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place. |
From there it hunts its prey, keeping watch with piercing eyes. | 29From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off. |
Its young gulp down blood. Where there’s a carcass, there you’ll find it.” | 30Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she. |
