New King James Version | New Living Translation |
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son. | 1“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt. |
As they called them, So they went from them; They sacrificed to the Baals, And burned incense to carved images. | 2But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols. |
“I taught Ephraim to walk, Taking them by their arms; But they did not know that I healed them. | 3I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him. |
I drew them with gentle cords, With bands of love, And I was to them as those who take the yoke from their neck. I stooped and fed them. | 4I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him. |
“He shall not return to the land of Egypt; But the Assyrian shall be his king, Because they refused to repent. | 5“But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt and will be forced to serve Assyria. |
And the sword shall slash in his cities, Devour his districts, And consume them, Because of their own counsels. | 6War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans. |
My people are bent on backsliding from Me. Though they call to the Most High, None at all exalt Him. | 7For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me. |
“How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I set you like Zeboiim? My heart churns within Me; My sympathy is stirred. | 8“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows. |
I will not execute the fierceness of My anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim. For I am God, and not man, The Holy One in your midst; And I will not come with terror. | 9No, I will not unleash my fierce anger. I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy. |
“They shall walk after the LORD. He will roar like a lion. When He roars, Then His sons shall come trembling from the west; | 10For someday the people will follow me. I, the LORD, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west. |
They shall come trembling like a bird from Egypt, Like a dove from the land of Assyria. And I will let them dwell in their houses,” Says the LORD. | 11Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt. Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the LORD. Charges against Israel and Judah |
“Ephraim has encircled Me with lies, And the house of Israel with deceit; But Judah still walks with God, Even with the Holy One who is faithful. | 12 Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One. |
