A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. | 1Lord, you have been our refuge in every generation. |
Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. | 2Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, you are God. |
You turn man to destruction, And say, “Return, O children of men.” | 3You return mankind to the dust, saying, "Return, descendants of Adam." |
For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it is past, And like a watch in the night. | 4For in your sight a thousand years are like yesterday that passes by, like a few hours of the night. |
You carry them away like a flood; They are like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up: | 5You end their lives; they sleep. They are like grass that grows in the morning-- |
In the morning it flourishes and grows up; In the evening it is cut down and withers. | 6in the morning it sprouts and grows; by evening it withers and dries up. |
For we have been consumed by Your anger, And by Your wrath we are terrified. | 7For we are consumed by your anger; we are terrified by your wrath. |
You have set our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance. | 8You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. |
For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; We finish our years like a sigh. | 9For all our days ebb away under your wrath; we end our years like a sigh. |
The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away. | 10Our lives last seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away. |
Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath. | 11Who understands the power of your anger? Your wrath matches the fear that is due you. |
So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom. | 12Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts. |
Return, O LORD! How long? And have compassion on Your servants. | 13LORD--how long? Turn and have compassion on your servants. |
Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy, That we may rejoice and be glad all our days! | 14Satisfy us in the morning with your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days. |
Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us, The years in which we have seen evil. | 15Make us rejoice for as many days as you have humbled us, for as many years as we have seen adversity. |
Let Your work appear to Your servants, And Your glory to their children. | 16Let your work be seen by your servants, and your splendor by their children. |
And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us, And establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands. | 17Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish for us the work of our hands--establish the work of our hands! |
