New King James Version | New International Version |
A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. | 1A prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. |
Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. | 2Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. |
You turn man to destruction, And say, “Return, O children of men.” | 3You turn people back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, you mortals." |
For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it is past, And like a watch in the night. | 4A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. |
You carry them away like a flood; They are like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up: | 5Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death-- they are like the new grass of the morning: |
In the morning it flourishes and grows up; In the evening it is cut down and withers. | 6In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. |
For we have been consumed by Your anger, And by Your wrath we are terrified. | 7We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. |
You have set our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance. | 8You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. |
For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; We finish our years like a sigh. | 9All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. |
The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away. | 10Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. |
Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath. | 11If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. |
So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom. | 12Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. |
Return, O LORD! How long? And have compassion on Your servants. | 13Relent, LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. |
Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy, That we may rejoice and be glad all our days! | 14Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. |
Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us, The years in which we have seen evil. | 15Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. |
Let Your work appear to Your servants, And Your glory to their children. | 16May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. |
And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us, And establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands. | 17May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us-- yes, establish the work of our hands. |
