Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,1Then Pharisees and experts in the law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said,
"Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!"2"Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat."
Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?3He answered them, "And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?
For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.'4For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.'
But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is 'devoted to God,'5But you say, 'If someone tells his father or mother, "Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God,"
they are not to 'honor their father or mother' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.6he does not need to honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition.
You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:7Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said,
"'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.8This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me,
They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.'"9and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'"
Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand.10Then he called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand.
What goes into someone's mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them."11What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person."
Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?"12Then the disciples came to him and said, "Do you know that when the Pharisees heard this saying they were offended?"
He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.13And he replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.
Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit."14Leave them! They are blind guides. If someone who is blind leads another who is blind, both will fall into a pit."
Peter said, "Explain the parable to us."15But Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us."
"Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them.16Jesus said, "Even after all this, are you still so foolish?
"Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body?17Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer?
But the things that come out of a person's mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person.
For out of the heart come evil thoughts--murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.19For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them."20These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person."
Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.21After going out from there, Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly."22A Canaanite woman from that area came and cried out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is horribly demon-possessed!"
Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us."23But he did not answer her a word. Then his disciples came and begged him, "Send her away, because she keeps on crying out after us."
He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."24So he answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said.25But she came and bowed down before him and said, "Lord, help me!"
He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs."26"It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs," he said.
"Yes it is, Lord," she said. "Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table."27"Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."
Then Jesus said to her, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed at that moment.28Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, your faith is great! Let what you want be done for you." And her daughter was healed from that hour.
Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down.29When he left there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain, where he sat down.
Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.30Then large crowds came to him bringing with them the lame, blind, crippled, mute, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he healed them.
The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.31As a result, the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they praised the God of Israel.
Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way."32Then Jesus called the disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already been here with me three days and they have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry since they may faint on the way."
His disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?"33The disciples said to him, "Where can we get enough bread in this desolate place to satisfy so great a crowd?"
"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they replied, "and a few small fish."34Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They replied, "Seven--and a few small fish."
He told the crowd to sit down on the ground.35After instructing the crowd to sit down on the ground,
Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people.36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, he broke them and began giving them to the disciples, who then gave them to the crowds.
They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.37They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.
The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children.38Not counting children and women, there were four thousand men who ate.
After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.39After sending away the crowd, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
