Remember, LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace. | 1Yahweh, remember what has happened to us. Look, and see our disgrace! |
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners. | 2Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners. |
We have become fatherless, our mothers are widows. | 3We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are widows. |
We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price. | 4We must pay for the water we drink; our wood comes at a price. |
Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest. | 5We are closely pursued; we are tired, and no one offers us rest. |
We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. | 6We made a treaty with Egypt and with Assyria, to get enough food. |
Our ancestors sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. | 7Our fathers sinned; they no longer exist, but we bear their punishment. |
Slaves rule over us, and there is no one to free us from their hands. | 8Slaves rule over us; no one rescues us from their hands. |
We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert. | 9We secure our food at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness. |
Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger. | 10Our skin is as hot as an oven from the ravages of hunger. |
Women have been violated in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah. | 11Women are raped in Zion, girls in the cities of Judah. |
Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. | 12Princes are hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. |
Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood. | 13Young men labor at millstones; boys stumble under loads of wood. |
The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music. | 14The elders have left the city gate, the young men, their music. |
Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. | 15Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. |
The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! | 16The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned. |
Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim | 17Because of this, our heart is sick; because of these, our eyes grow dim: |
for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, with jackals prowling over it. | 18because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate and has jackals prowling in it. |
You, LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation. | 19You, LORD, are enthroned forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation. |
Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us so long? | 20Why have You forgotten us forever, abandoned us for our entire lives? |
Restore us to yourself, LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old | 21 LORD, restore us to Yourself, so we may return; renew our days as in former times, |
unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure. | 22unless You have completely rejected us and are intensely angry with us. |
