He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was all his household; he did many acts of charity for the people and prayed to God regularly. | 2He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. |
About three o'clock one afternoon he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God who came in and said to him, "Cornelius." | 3One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!" |
Staring at him and becoming greatly afraid, Cornelius replied, "What is it, Lord?" The angel said to him, "Your prayers and your acts of charity have gone up as a memorial before God. | 4Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. |
Now send men to Joppa and summon a man named Simon, who is called Peter. | 5Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. |
This man is staying as a guest with a man named Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea." | 6He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea." |
When the angel who had spoken to him departed, Cornelius called two of his personal servants and a devout soldier from among those who served him, | 7When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. |
and when he had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa. | 8He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa. |
About noon the next day, while they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. | 9About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. |
He became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they were preparing the meal, a trance came over him. | 10He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. |
He saw heaven opened and an object something like a large sheet descending, being let down to earth by its four corners. | 11He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. |
In it were all kinds of four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth and wild birds. | 12It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. |
Then a voice said to him, "Get up, Peter; slaughter and eat!" | 13Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat." |
But Peter said, "Certainly not, Lord, for I have never eaten anything defiled and ritually unclean!" | 14"Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean." |
The voice spoke to him again, a second time, "What God has made clean, you must not consider ritually unclean!" | 15The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." |
This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into heaven. | 16This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven. |
Now while Peter was puzzling over what the vision he had seen could signify, the men sent by Cornelius had learned where Simon's house was and approached the gate. | 17While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate. |
They called out to ask if Simon, known as Peter, was staying there as a guest. | 18They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there. |
While Peter was still thinking seriously about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Look! Three men are looking for you. | 19While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you. |
But get up, go down, and accompany them without hesitation, because I have sent them." | 20So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them." |
So Peter went down to the men and said, "Here I am, the person you're looking for. Why have you come?" | 21Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?" |
They said, "Cornelius the centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man, well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear a message from you." | 22The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say." |
So Peter invited them in and entertained them as guests. On the next day he got up and set out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. | 23Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along. |
The following day he entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting anxiously for them and had called together his relatives and close friends. | 24The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. |
So when Peter came in, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him. | 25As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. |
But Peter helped him up, saying, "Stand up. I too am a mere mortal." | 26But Peter made him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man myself." |
Peter continued talking with him as he went in, and he found many people gathered together. | 27While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. |
He said to them, "You know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile, yet God has shown me that I should call no person defiled or ritually unclean. | 28He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean. |
Therefore when you sent for me, I came without any objection. Now may I ask why you sent for me?" | 29So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?" |
Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this very hour, at three o'clock in the afternoon, I was praying in my house, and suddenly a man in shining clothing stood before me | 30Cornelius answered: "Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me |
and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your acts of charity have been remembered before God. | 31and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. |
Therefore send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter. This man is staying as a guest in the house of Simon the tanner, by the sea.' | 32Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.' |
Therefore I sent for you at once, and you were kind enough to come. So now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to say to us." | 33So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us." |
Then Peter started speaking: "I now truly understand that God does not show favoritism in dealing with people, | 34Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism |
but in every nation the person who fears him and does what is right is welcomed before him. | 35but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. |
You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, proclaiming the good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all)-- | 36You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. |
you know what happened throughout Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John announced: | 37You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-- |
with respect to Jesus from Nazareth, that God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power. 39We are witnesses of all the things he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, | 39"We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, |
but God raised him up on the third day and caused him to be seen, | 40but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. |
not by all the people, but by us, the witnesses God had already chosen, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. | 41He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. |
He commanded us to preach to the people and to warn them that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. | 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. |
About him all the prophets testify, that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." | 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." |
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the message. | 44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. |

"No one can withhold the water for these people to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?" | 47"Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." |
So he gave orders to have them baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for several days. | 48So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. |
