Proverbs 6
NET Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleInternational Standard Version
My child, if you have made a pledge for your neighbor, and have become a guarantor for a stranger, 1My son, if you guarantee a loan for your neighbor, if you have agreed to a deal with a stranger,
if you have been ensnared by the words you have uttered, and have been caught by the words you have spoken, 2trapped by your own words, and caught by your own words,
then, my child, do this in order to deliver yourself, because you have fallen into your neighbor's power: go, humble yourself, and appeal firmly to your neighbor. 3then do this, my son, and deliver yourself, because you have come under your neighbor's control. Go, humble yourself! Plead passionately with your neighbor!
Permit no sleep to your eyes or slumber to your eyelids. 4Don't allow yourself to sleep or even to close your eyes.
Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a snare, and like a bird from the trap of the fowler. 5Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a hunter's hand, or like a bird from a fowler's hand.
Go to the ant, you sluggard; observe its ways and be wise! 6Go to the ant, you lazy man! Observe its ways and become wise.
It has no commander, overseer, or ruler, 7It has no commander, officer, or ruler,
yet it prepares its food in the summer; it gathers at the harvest what it will eat. 8but prepares its provisions in the summer and gathers its food in the harvest.
How long, you sluggard, will you lie there? When will you rise from your sleep? 9How long will you lie down, lazy man? When will you get up from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to relax, 10A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,
and your poverty will come like a robber, and your need like an armed man. 11and your poverty will come on you like a bandit and your desperation like an armed man.
A worthless and wicked person walks around saying perverse things; 12A worthless man, a wicked man, goes around with devious speech,
he winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, and points with his fingers; 13winking with his eyes, making signs with his feet, pointing with his fingers,
he plots evil with perverse thoughts in his heart, he spreads contention at all times. 14planning evil with a perverse mind, continually stirring up discord.
Therefore, his disaster will come suddenly; in an instant he will be broken, and there will be no remedy. 15Therefore, disaster will overtake him suddenly. He will be broken in an instant, and he will never recover.
There are six things that the LORD hates, even seven things that are an abomination to him: 16Here are six things that the LORD hates— seven, in fact, are detestable to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 17Arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, and hands shedding innocent blood;
a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift to run to evil, 18a heart crafting evil plans, feet running swiftly to wickedness,
a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who spreads discord among family members. 19a false witness snorting lies, and someone sowing quarrels between brothers.
My child, guard the commands of your father and do not forsake the instruction of your mother. 20Keep your father's commands, my son, and never forsake your mother's rules,
Bind them on your heart continually; fasten them around your neck. 21by binding them to your heart continuously, fastening them around your neck.
When you walk about, they will guide you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you wake up, they will talk to you. 22During your travels wisdom will lead you; she will watch over you while you rest; and when you are startled from your sleep, she will commune with you.
For the commandments are like a lamp, instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like the road leading to life, 23Because the command is a lamp and the Law a light, rebukes that discipline are a way of life—
by keeping you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the loose woman. 24to protect you from the evil woman, from the words of the seductive woman.
Do not lust in your heart for her beauty, and do not let her captivate you with her alluring eyes; 25Do not focus on her beauty in your mind, nor allow her to take you prisoner with her flirting eyes,
for on account of a prostitute one is brought down to a loaf of bread, but the wife of another man preys on your precious life. 26because the price of a whore is a loaf of bread, and an adulterous woman stalks a man's precious life.
Can a man hold fire against his chest without burning his clothes? 27Can a man scoop fire into his bosom without burning his clothes?
Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet? 28Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet?
So it is with the one who has sex with his neighbor's wife; no one who touches her will escape punishment. 29So also is it with someone who has sex with his neighbor's wife; anyone touching her will not remain unpunished.
People do not despise a thief when he steals to fulfill his need when he is hungry. 30A thief isn't despised if he steals to meet his needs when he is hungry,
Yet if he is caught he must repay seven times over, he might even have to give all the wealth of his house. 31but when he is discovered, he must restore seven-fold, forfeiting the entire value of his house.
A man who commits adultery with a woman lacks wisdom, whoever does it destroys his own life. 32Whoever commits adultery with a woman is out of his mind; by doing so he corrupts his own soul.
He will be beaten and despised, and his reproach will not be wiped away; 33He will receive a beating and dishonor, and his shame won't disappear,
for jealousy kindles a husband's rage, and he will not show mercy when he takes revenge. 34because jealousy incites a strong man's rage, and he will show no mercy when it's time for revenge.
He will not consider any compensation; he will not be willing, even if you multiply the compensation. 35He will not consider any payment, nor will he be willing to accept it, no matter how large the bribe.
