I wrote the former account, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach1In my first book, Theophilus, I wrote about everything Jesus did and taught from the beginning,
until the day he was taken up to heaven, after he had given orders by the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.2up to the day when he was taken up to heaven after giving orders by the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.
To the same apostles also, after his suffering, he presented himself alive with many convincing proofs. He was seen by them over a forty-day period and spoke about matters concerning the kingdom of God.3After he had suffered, he had shown himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during a period of 40 days and telling them about the kingdom of God.
While he was with them, he declared, "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait there for what my Father promised, which you heard about from me.4While he was meeting with them, he ordered them, "Don't leave Jerusalem. Instead, wait for what the Father has promised, about which you heard me speak,
For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." 5because John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit a few days from now."
So when they had gathered together, they began to ask him, "Lord, is this the time when you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?"6Now those who had gathered together began to ask Jesus, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?"
He told them, "You are not permitted to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.7He answered them, "It isn't for you to know what times or periods the Father has fixed by his own authority.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth."8But you'll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
After he had said this, while they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud hid him from their sight.9After saying this, Jesus was taken up while those who had gathered together were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
As they were still staring into the sky while he was going, suddenly two men in white clothing stood near them10While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, two men in white robes stood right beside them.
and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking up into the sky? This same Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will come back in the same way you saw him go into heaven." 11They asked, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you saw him go up into heaven."
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called the Mount of Olives (which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away).12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away.
When they had entered Jerusalem, they went to the upstairs room where they were staying. Peter and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James were there.13When they came into the city, these men went to the upstairs room where they had been staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
All these continued together in prayer with one mind, together with the women, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.14With one mind, all of them kept devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women (including Mary the mother of Jesus) and his brothers.
In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty people) and said,15At that time, Peter got up among the brothers (there were about 120 people present) and said,
"Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through David concerning Judas--who became the guide for those who arrested Jesus--16"Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the voice of David about Judas, who was the guide for those who arrested Jesus,
for he was counted as one of us and received a share in this ministry."17because he was one of our number and was appointed to share in this ministry."
(Now this man Judas acquired a field with the reward of his unjust deed, and falling headfirst he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out.18(Now this man bought a field with the money he got for his crime. Falling on his face, he burst open in the middle, and all his intestines gushed out.
This became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so that in their own language they called that field Hakeldama, that is, "Field of Blood.")19This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that this field is called in their language Hakeldama, that is, "The Field of Blood".)
"For it is written in the book of Psalms, 'Let his house become deserted, and let there be no one to live in it,' and 'Let another take his position of responsibility.'20"For in the Book of Psalms it is written, 'Let his estate be desolate, and let no one live on it,' and, 'Let someone else take over his office,'
Thus one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time the Lord Jesus associated with us,21who was one of the men associated with us all the time the Lord Jesus came and went among us,
beginning from his baptism by John until the day he was taken up from us--one of these must become a witness of his resurrection together with us."22beginning when he was baptized by John until the day he was taken up from us. Therefore, someone like this must become a witness with us to his resurrection."
So they proposed two candidates: Joseph called Barsabbas (also called Justus) and Matthias.23So they nominated two men—Joseph called Barsabbas, who also was called Justus, and Matthias.
Then they prayed, "Lord, you know the hearts of all. Show us which one of these two you have chosen24Then they prayed, "Lord, you know the hearts of all people. Show us which one of these two men you have chosen
to assume the task of this service and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place."25to serve in this office of apostle, from which Judas left to go to his own place."
Then they cast lots for them, and the one chosen was Matthias; so he was counted with the eleven apostles. 26So they drew lots for them, and when the lot fell on Matthias, he was enrolled with the eleven apostles.
