For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. O God, we have heard with our ears, Our fathers have told us The work that You did in their days, In the days of old. | 1For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old. |
You with Your own hand drove out the nations; Then You planted them; You afflicted the peoples, Then You spread them abroad. | 2With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out. |
For by their own sword they did not possess the land, And their own arm did not save them, But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, For You favored them. | 3For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them. |
You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob. | 4You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob. |
Through You we will push back our adversaries; Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us. | 5Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. |
For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me. | 6For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me. |
But You have saved us from our adversaries, And You have put to shame those who hate us. | 7For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame. |
In God we have boasted all day long, And we will give thanks to Your name forever. Selah. | 8In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah |
Yet You have rejected us and brought us to dishonor, And do not go out with our armies. | 9But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies. |
You cause us to turn back from the adversary; And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves. | 10You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us. |
You give us as sheep to be eaten And have scattered us among the nations. | 11You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations. |
You sell Your people cheaply, And have not profited by their sale. | 12You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale. |
You make us a reproach to our neighbors, A scoffing and a derision to those around us. | 13You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us. |
You make us a byword among the nations, A laughingstock among the peoples. | 14You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. |
All day long my dishonor is before me And my humiliation has overwhelmed me, | 15All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face, |
Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger. | 16at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge. |
All this has come upon us, but we have not forgotten You, And we have not dealt falsely with Your covenant. | 17All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. |
Our heart has not turned back, And our steps have not deviated from Your way, | 18Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. |
Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals And covered us with the shadow of death. | 19But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God Or extended our hands to a strange god, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, |
Would not God find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. | 21would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart? |
But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. | 22Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. |
Arouse Yourself, why do You sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not reject us forever. | 23Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever. |
Why do You hide Your face And forget our affliction and our oppression? | 24Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression? |
For our soul has sunk down into the dust; Our body cleaves to the earth. | 25For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth. |
Rise up, be our help, And redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness. | 26Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion. |
