And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. | 1Jesus went out from there and came into His hometown; and His disciples followed Him. |
And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? | 2When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands? |
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. | 3"Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him. |
But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. | 4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household." |
And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. | 5And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. |
And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching. | 6And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching. |
And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; | 7And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits; |
And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: | 8and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff-- no bread, no bag, no money in their belt-- |
But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. | 9but to wear sandals; and He added, "Do not put on two tunics." |
And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. | 10And He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town. |
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. | 11"Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them." |
And they went out, and preached that men should repent. | 12They went out and preached that men should repent. |
And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. | 13And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them. |
And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. | 14And King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him." |
Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. | 15But others were saying, "He is Elijah." And others were saying, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old." |
But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. | 16But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen!" |
For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. | 17For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her. |
For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. | 18For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." |
Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: | 19Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so; |
For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. | 20for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him. |
And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; | 21A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee; |
And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. | 22and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you." |
And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. | 23And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom." |
And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. | 24And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist." |
And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. | 25Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." |
And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. | 26And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her. |
And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, | 27Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison, |
And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. | 28and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. |
And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb. | 29When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb. |
And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. | 30The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. |
And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. | 31And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while." (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.) |
And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. | 32They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves. |
And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. | 33The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them. |
And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. | 34When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. |
And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: | 35When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and it is already quite late; |
Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. | 36send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat." |
He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? | 37But He answered them, "You give them something to eat!" And they said to Him, "Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give them something to eat?" |
He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. | 38And He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go look!" And when they found out, they said, "Five, and two fish." |
And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. | 39And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass. |
And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. | 40They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. |
And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. | 41And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all. |
And they did all eat, and were filled. | 42They all ate and were satisfied, |
And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. | 43and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish. |
And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. | 44There were five thousand men who ate the loaves. |
And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. | 45Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. |
And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. | 46After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray. |
And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. | 47When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. |
And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. | 48Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them. |
But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: | 49But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out; |
For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. | 50for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, "Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid." |
And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. | 51Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished, |
For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. | 52for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened. |
And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. | 53When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore. |
And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, | 54When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him, |
And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. | 55and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was. |
And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole. | 56Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured. |
