| 1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vintner. | 1 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. |
| 2He cuts off every branch that does not produce fruit in me, and he cuts back every branch that does produce fruit, so that it might produce more fruit. | 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. |
| 3You are already clean because of what I've spoken to you. | 3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. |
| 4"Abide in me, and I will abide in you. Just as the branch cannot produce fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. | 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. |
| 5I am the vine, you are the branches. The one who abides in me while I abide in him produces much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. | 5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. |
| 6Unless a person abides in me, he is thrown away like a pruned branch and dries up. People gather such branches, throw them into a fire, and they are burned up. | 6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. |
| 7"If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you can ask for anything you want, and you'll receive it. | 7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! |
| 8This is how my Father is glorified, when you produce a lot of fruit and so prove to be my disciples. | 8 When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father. |
| 9Just as the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. So abide in my love. | 9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. |
| 10If you keep my commandments, you'll abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. | 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. |
| 11I've told you this, so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. | 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! |
| 12"This is my commandment: that you love one another as I have loved you. | 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. |
| 13No one shows greater love than when he lays down his life for his friends. | 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. |
| 14You are my friends, if you do what I command you. | 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. |
| 15I don't call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn't know what his master is doing. But I've called you friends, because I've made known to you everything that I've heard from my Father. | 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. |
| 16"You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you. I have appointed you to go and produce fruit that will last, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you. | 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. |
| 17I am giving you these commandments so that you may love one another." | 17 This is my command: Love each other. The World’s Hatred |
| 18"If the world hates you, you should realize that it hated me before you. | 18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. |
| 19If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as one of its own. But because you do not belong to the world and I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you. | 19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. |
| 20Remember what I told you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. | 20 Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you. |
| 21They will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me. | 21 They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the one who sent me. |
| 22"If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have any sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. | 22 They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin. |
| 23The person who hates me also hates my Father. | 23 Anyone who hates me also hates my Father. |
| 24If I hadn't done among them the actions that no one else did, they wouldn't have any sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. | 24 If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father. |
| 25But this happened so that what has been written in their Law might be fulfilled: 'They hated me for no reason.' | 25 This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures : ‘They hated me without cause.’ |
| 26"When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father— the Spirit of Truth, who comes from the Father—he will testify on my behalf. | 26 “But I will send you the Advocate —the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. |
| 27You will testify also, because you have been with me from the beginning. | 27 And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry. |
