| 1God, we heard it with our ears; our ancestors told us about what you did in their day— a long time ago. | 1For the music director; by the Korahites, a well-written song. O God, we have clearly heard; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in ancient times. |
| 2With your hand you expelled the nations and established our ancestors. You afflicted nations and cast them out. | 2You, by your power, defeated nations and settled our fathers on their land; you crushed the people living there and enabled our ancestors to occupy it. |
| 3It was not with their sword that they inherited the land, nor did their own arm deliver them. But it was by your power, your strength, and by the light of your face; because you were pleased with them. | 3For they did not conquer the land by their swords, and they did not prevail by their strength, but rather by your power, strength and good favor, for you were partial to them. |
| 4You are my king, God, command victories for Jacob. | 4You are my king, O God! Decree Jacob's deliverance! |
| 5Through you we will knock down our oppressors; through your name we will tread down those who rise up against us. | 5By your power we will drive back our enemies; by your strength we will trample down our foes! |
| 6For I place no confidence in my bow, nor will my sword deliver me. | 6For I do not trust in my bow, and I do not prevail by my sword. |
| 7For you delivered us from our oppressors and put to shame those who hate us. | 7For you deliver us from our enemies; you humiliate those who hate us. |

| 9However, you cast us off and made us ashamed! You did not even march with our armies! | 9But you rejected and embarrassed us! You did not go into battle with our armies. |
| 10You made us retreat from our oppressors. Our enemies ransacked us. | 10You made us retreat from the enemy. Those who hate us take whatever they want from us. |
| 11You handed us over to be slaughtered like sheep and you scattered us among the nations. | 11You handed us over like sheep to be eaten; you scattered us among the nations. |
| 12You sold out your people for nothing, and made no profit at that price. | 12You sold your people for a pittance; you did not ask a high price for them. |
| 13You made us a laughing stock to our neighbors, a source of mockery and derision to those around us. | 13You made us an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. |
| 14You made us an object lesson among the nations; people shake their heads at us. | 14You made us an object of ridicule among the nations; foreigners treat us with contempt. |
| 15My dishonor tortures me continuously; the shame on my face overwhelms me | 15All day long I feel humiliated and am overwhelmed with shame, |
| 16because of the voice of the one who mocks and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger. | 16before the vindictive enemy who ridicules and insults me. |
| 17All this came upon us, yet we did not forsake you, and we have not dealt falsely with your covenant; | 17All this has happened to us, even though we have not rejected you or violated your covenant with us. |
| 18Our hearts have not turned away; our steps have not swerved from your path. | 18We have not been unfaithful, nor have we disobeyed your commands. |
| 19Nevertheless, you crushed us in the lair of jackals, and covered us in deep darkness. | 19Yet you have battered us, leaving us a heap of ruins overrun by wild dogs; you have covered us with darkness. |
| 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or lifted our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we had rejected our God, and spread out our hands in prayer to another god, |
| 21wouldn't God find out since he knows the secrets of the heart? | 21would not God discover it, for he knows one's thoughts? |
| 22For your sake we are being killed all day long. We are thought of as sheep to be slaughtered. | 22Yet because of you we are killed all day long; we are treated like sheep at the slaughtering block. |
| 23Wake up! Why are you asleep, Lord? Get up! Don't cast us off forever! | 23Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Wake up! Do not reject us forever! |
| 24Why are you hiding your face? Why are you ignoring our affliction and oppression? | 24Why do you look the other way, and ignore the way we are oppressed and mistreated? |
| 25For we have collapsed in the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. | 25For we lie in the dirt, with our bellies pressed to the ground. |
| 26Arise! Deliver us! Redeem us according to your gracious love! | 26Rise up and help us! Rescue us because of your loyal love! |
