| 1"Now these are the commands, decrees, and ordinances that the LORD commanded me to teach you. Obey them in the land you are entering to possess, | 1“Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the LORD your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, |
| 2so that you, your children, and your grandchildren may fear the LORD your God. Keep all his decrees and commandments that I'm giving you every day of your life, so you may live a long time. | 2that you may fear the LORD your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. |
| 3Listen, Israel! Be careful to obey, so that life may go well for you and that you may increase greatly. Just as the LORD God of your ancestors told you, you'll have a land flowing with milk and honey. | 3Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. |
| 4"Listen, Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. | 4“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. |
| 5You are to love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. | 5You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. |
| 6Let these words that I'm commanding you today be always on your heart. | 6And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. |
| 7Teach them repeatedly to your children. Talk about them while sitting in your house or walking on the road, and as you lie down or get up. | 7You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. |
| 8Tie them as reminders on your forearm, bind them on your forehead, | 8You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. |
| 9and write them on the door frames of your house and on your gates." | 9You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. |
| 10"When the LORD your God brings you to the land that he promised to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he will give you large and beautiful cities that you didn't build, | 10“And when the LORD your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, |
| 11houses filled with every good thing that you didn't supply, wells that you didn't dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you didn't plant. When you eat and are satisfied, | 11and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, |
| 12be careful not to forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and slavery. | 12then take care lest you forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. |
| 13Fear the LORD your God, serve him, and make your oaths in his name. | 13It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. |
| 14Do not follow other gods, from the gods of the peoples around you. | 14You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you— |
| 15For the LORD your God who is among you is a jealous God. He will turn his anger against you and destroy you from the surface of the land." | 15for the LORD your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the LORD your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth. |
| 16"Don't test the LORD your God like you did in Massah. | 16“You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. |
| 17Be sure to observe the commands of the LORD your God, his testimonies and his decrees that he gave you. | 17You shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you. |
| 18Do what is good and right in the LORD's sight so it may go well with you. Then you'll enter and possess the good land that the LORD your God promised to your ancestors, | 18And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers |
| 19expelling all your enemies before you, as the LORD said." | 19by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the LORD has promised. |
| 20"When your son asks you in the future, 'What is the meaning of the instructions, decrees, and ordinances that the LORD our God commanded you?' | 20“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the LORD our God has commanded you?’ |
| 21tell him, 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with great power. | 21then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. |
| 22Before our very eyes, the LORD did great and terrible signs and wonders in Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to his entire household. | 22And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. |
| 23But as for us, he brought us out from there to bring us into the land and give it to us, as he promised our ancestors. | 23And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. |
| 24Then the LORD commanded us to observe all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God for our own good, so that he may keep us alive as we are today. | 24And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. |
| 25It will be credited as righteousness for us, if we're careful to obey the entire Law in the presence of the LORD our God, as he commanded.'" | 25And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us.’ |
