One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. | 1One Sabbath, Jesus went to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal. The guests were watching Jesus closely. |
And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. | 2A man whose body was swollen with fluid suddenly appeared in front of him. |
And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” | 3So Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the Law, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?" |
But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. | 4But they kept silent. So he took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away. |
And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” | 5Then he asked them, "If your son or ox falls into a well on the Sabbath day, you would pull him out immediately, wouldn't you?" |
And they could not reply to these things. | 6And they couldn't argue with him about this. |
Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, | 7When Jesus noticed how the guests were choosing the places of honor, he told them a parable. |
“When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, | 8"When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don't sit down at the place of honor in case someone more important than you was invited by the host. |
and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. | 9Then the host who invited both of you would come to you and say, 'Give this person your place.' In disgrace, you would have to take the place of least honor. |
But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. | 10But when you are invited, go and sit down at the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, 'Friend, move up higher,' and you will be honored in the presence of everyone who eats with you. |
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” | 11Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be exalted." |
He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. | 12Then he told the man who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, stop inviting only your friends, brothers, relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return and you would be repaid. |
But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, | 13Instead, when you give a banquet, make it your habit to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. |
and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” | 14Then you will be blessed because they can't repay you. And you will be repaid when the righteous are resurrected." |
When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” | 15Now one of those eating with him heard this and told him, "How blessed is the person who will eat in the kingdom of God!" |
But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. | 16Jesus told him, "A man gave a large banquet and invited many people. |
And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ | 17When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited, 'Come! Everything is now ready.' |
But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ | 18Every single one of them began asking to be excused. The first told him, 'I bought a field, and I need to go out and inspect it. Please excuse me.' |
And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ | 19Another said, 'I bought five pairs of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.' |
And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ | 20Still another said, 'I recently got married, so I can't come.' |
So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ | 21"So the servant went back and reported all this to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and told his servant, 'Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring back the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.' |
And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ | 22The servant said, 'Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.' |
And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. | 23Then the master told the servant, 'Go out into the streets and the lanes and make the people come in, so that my house may be full. |
For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’” | 24Because I tell all of you, none of those men who were invited will taste anything at my banquet.'" |
Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, | 25Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus. He turned and told them, |
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. | 26"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as his own life, he can't be my disciple. |
Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. | 27Whoever doesn't carry his cross and follow me can't be my disciple. |
For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? | 28"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. He will first sit down and estimate the cost to see whether he has enough money to finish it, won't he? |
Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, | 29Otherwise, if he lays a foundation and can't finish the building, everyone who watches will begin to ridicule him |
saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ | 30and say, 'This person started a building but couldn't finish it.' |
Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? | 31"Or suppose a king is going to war against another king. He will first sit down and consider whether with 10,000 men he can fight the one coming against him with 20,000 men, won't he? |
And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. | 32If he can't, he will send a delegation to ask for terms of peace while the other king is still far away. |
So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. | 33In the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions." |
“Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? | 34"Now, salt is good. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can its flavor be restored? |
It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” | 35It's suitable neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. People throw it away. Let the person who has ears to hear, listen!" |
