The man was intimate with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have had a male child with the LORD's help." | 1Now the man had marital relations with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. Then she said, "I have created a man just as the LORD did!" |
She also gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd of flocks, but Cain worked the ground. | 2Then she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel took care of the flocks, while Cain cultivated the ground. |
In the course of time Cain presented some of the land's produce as an offering to the LORD. | 3At the designated time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground for an offering to the LORD. |
And Abel also presented an offering--some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, | 4But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock--even the fattest of them. And the LORD was pleased with Abel and his offering, |
but he did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent. | 5but with Cain and his offering he was not pleased. So Cain became very angry, and his expression was downcast. |
Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you furious? And why do you look despondent? | 6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why is your expression downcast? |
If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it." | 7Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it." |
Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. | 8Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. |
Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's guardian?" | 9Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" And he replied, "I don't know! Am I my brother's guardian?" |
Then he said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground! | 10But the LORD said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground! |
So now you are cursed, alienated from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood you have shed. | 11So now, you are banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |
If you work the ground, it will never again give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth." | 12When you try to cultivate the ground it will no longer yield its best for you. You will be a homeless wanderer on the earth." |
But Cain answered the LORD, "My punishment is too great to bear! | 13Then Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is too great to endure! |
Since you are banishing me today from the face of the earth, and I must hide from your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me." | 14Look! You are driving me off the land today, and I must hide from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me." |
Then the LORD replied to him, "In that case, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." And he placed a mark on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him. | 15But the LORD said to him, "All right then, if anyone kills Cain, Cain will be avenged seven times as much." Then the LORD put a special mark on Cain so that no one who found him would strike him down. |
Then Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. | 16So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |
