| 1The man was intimate with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have had a male child with the LORD's help." | 1Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, "I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD." |
| 2She also gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd of flocks, but Cain worked the ground. | 2Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. |
| 3In the course of time Cain presented some of the land's produce as an offering to the LORD. | 3So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. |
| 4And Abel also presented an offering--some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, | 4Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; |
| 5but he did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent. | 5but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. |
| 6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you furious? And why do you look despondent? | 6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? |
| 7If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it." | 7"If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it." |
| 8Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. | 8Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. |
| 9Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's guardian?" | 9Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" And he said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" |
| 10Then he said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground! | 10He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground. |
| 11So now you are cursed, alienated from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood you have shed. | 11"Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |
| 12If you work the ground, it will never again give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth." | 12"When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth." |
| 13But Cain answered the LORD, "My punishment is too great to bear! | 13Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is too great to bear! |
| 14Since you are banishing me today from the face of the earth, and I must hide from your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me." | 14"Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." |
| 15Then the LORD replied to him, "In that case, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." And he placed a mark on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him. | 15So the LORD said to him, "Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him. |
| 16Then Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. | 16Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |
| 17Cain was intimate with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain became the builder of a city, and he named the city Enoch after his son. | 17Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son. |
| 18Irad was born to Enoch, Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. | 18Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech. |
| 19Lamech took two wives for himself, one named Adah and the other named Zillah. | 19Lamech took to himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah. |
| 20Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of the nomadic herdsmen. | 20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. |
| 21His brother was named Jubal; he was the father of all who play the lyre and the flute. | 21His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. |
| 22Zillah bore Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of bronze and iron tools. Tubal-cain's sister was Naamah. | 22As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. |
| 23Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words. For I killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. | 23Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, Listen to my voice, You wives of Lamech, Give heed to my speech, For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me; |
| 24If Cain is to be avenged seven times over, then for Lamech it will be seventy-seven times! | 24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold." |
| 25Adam was intimate with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, for she said, "God has given me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him." | 25Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, "God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him." |
| 26A son was born to Seth also, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD. | 26To Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the LORD. |
