Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever. | 1Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD, since he is good, for his gracious love exists forever. |
Who can declare the LORD's mighty acts or proclaim all the praise due him? | 2Who can fully describe the mighty acts of the LORD or proclaim all his praises? |
How happy are those who uphold justice, who practice righteousness at all times. | 3How happy are those who enforce justice, who live righteously all the time. |
Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people. Come to me with your salvation | 4Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people. Visit us with your deliverance, |
so that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones, rejoice in the joy of your nation, and boast about your heritage. | 5to witness the prosperity of your chosen ones, to rejoice in your nation's joy, to glory in your inheritance. |
Both we and our fathers have sinned; we have done wrong and have acted wickedly. | 6We have sinned, along with our ancestors; we have committed iniquity and wickedness. |
Our fathers in Egypt did not grasp the significance of your wondrous works or remember your many acts of faithful love; instead, they rebelled by the sea--the Red Sea. | 7In Egypt, our ancestors neither comprehended your awesome deeds nor remembered your abundant gracious love. Instead, they rebelled beside the sea, the Reed Sea. |
Yet he saved them for his name's sake, to make his power known. | 8He delivered for the sake of his name, to make his power known. |
He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; he led them through the depths as through a desert. | 9He shouted at the Reed Sea and it dried up; and led them through the sea as though through a desert. |
He saved them from the power of the adversary; he redeemed them from the power of the enemy. | 10He delivered them from the power of their foe; redeeming them from the power of their enemy. |
Water covered their foes; not one of them remained. | 11The water overwhelmed their enemies, so that not one of them survived. |
Then they believed his promises and sang his praise. | 12Then they believed his word and sung his praise. |
They soon forgot his works and would not wait for his counsel. | 13But they quickly forgot his deeds and did not wait for his counsel. |
They were seized with craving in the wilderness and tested God in the desert. | 14They were overwhelmed with craving in the wilderness, so God tested them in the wasteland. |
He gave them what they asked for, but sent a wasting disease among them. | 15God granted them their request, but sent leanness into their lives. |
In the camp they were envious of Moses and of Aaron, the LORD's holy one. | 16They were envious of Moses in the camp, and of Aaron, the holy one of the LORD. |
The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it covered the assembly of Abiram. | 17The earth opened and swallowed Dathan, closing over Abiram's clan. |
Fire blazed throughout their assembly; flames consumed the wicked. | 18Then a fire burned among their company, a flame that set the wicked ablaze. |
At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped the cast metal image. | 19They fashioned a calf at Horeb and worshipped a carved image. |
They exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating ox. | 20They exchanged their glory with the image of a grass-eating bull. |
They forgot God their Savior, who did great things in Egypt, | 21They forgot God their Savior, who performed great things in Egypt— |
wondrous works in the land of Ham, awe-inspiring acts at the Red Sea. | 22awesome deeds in the land of Ham, astonishing deeds at the Reed Sea. |
So he said he would have destroyed them--if Moses his chosen one had not stood before him in the breach to turn his wrath away from destroying them. | 23He would have destroyed them but for Moses, his chosen one, who stood in the breach before him to avert his destructive wrath. |
They despised the pleasant land and did not believe his promise. | 24They rejected the desirable land, and they didn't trust his promise. |
They grumbled in their tents and did not listen to the LORD. | 25They murmured in their tents, and didn't listen to the voice of the LORD. |
So he raised his hand against them with an oath that he would make them fall in the desert | 26So he swore an oath concerning them— that he would cause them to die in the wilderness, |
and would disperse their descendants among the nations, scattering them throughout the lands. | 27to cause their children to perish among the nations and be scattered among many lands. |
They aligned themselves with Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods. | 28For they adopted the worship of Baal Peor and ate sacrifices offered to the dead. |
They angered the LORD with their deeds, and a plague broke out against them. | 29They had provoked anger by their deeds, so that a plague broke out against them. |
But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was stopped. | 30But Phinehas intervened and prayed so that the plague was restrained. |
It was credited to him as righteousness throughout all generations to come. | 31And it was credited to him as a righteous act, from generation to generation—to eternity. |
They angered the LORD at the Waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered because of them; | 32They provoked wrath at the waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered on account of them. |
for they embittered his spirit, and he spoke rashly with his lips. | 33For they rebelled against him, so that he spoke thoughtlessly with his lips. |
They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them | 34They never destroyed the people, as the LORD had commanded them. |
but mingled with the nations and adopted their ways. | 35Instead, they mingled among the nations and learned their ways. |
They served their idols, which became a snare to them. | 36They worshipped their idols, and this became a trap for them. |
They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons. | 37They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons. |
They shed innocent blood--the blood of their sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; so the land became polluted with blood. | 38They shed innocent blood— the blood of their sons and daughters— whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, thereby polluting the land with blood. |
They defiled themselves by their actions and prostituted themselves by their deeds. | 39Therefore, they became unclean because of what they did; they have acted like whores by their evil deeds. |
Therefore the LORD's anger burned against his people, and he abhorred his own inheritance. | 40The LORD's anger burned against his people, so that he despised his own inheritance. |
He handed them over to the nations; those who hated them ruled over them. | 41He turned them over to domination by nations where those who hated them ruled over them. |
Their enemies oppressed them, and they were subdued under their power. | 42Their enemies oppressed them, so that they were humiliated by their power. |
He rescued them many times, but they continued to rebel deliberately and were beaten down by their iniquity. | 43He delivered them many times, but they demonstrated rebellion by their evil plans; therefore they sunk deep in their sins. |
When he heard their cry, he took note of their distress, | 44Yet when he saw their distress and heard their cries for help, |
remembered his covenant with them, and relented according to the abundance of his faithful love. | 45he remembered his covenant with them, and so relented according to the greatness of his gracious love. |
He caused them to be pitied before all their captors. | 46He caused all their captors to show compassion toward them. |
Save us, LORD our God, and gather us from the nations, so that we may give thanks to your holy name and rejoice in your praise. | 47Deliver us, LORD our God, gather us from among the nations so we may praise your holy name and rejoice in praising you. |
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say, "Amen!" Hallelujah! | 48Blessed are you, LORD God of Israel, from eternity to eternity; Let all the people say, "Amen!" Hallelujah! |
