Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever. | 1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His gracious love exists forever. |
Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that he has redeemed them from the power of the foe | 2Let those who have been redeemed by the LORD declare it— those whom he redeemed from the power of the enemy, |
and has gathered them from the lands--from the east and the west, from the north and the south. | 3those whom he gathered from other lands— from the east, west, north, and south. |
Some wandered in the desolate wilderness, finding no way to a city where they could live. | 4They wandered in desolate wilderness; they found no road to a city where they could live. |
They were hungry and thirsty; their spirits failed within them. | 5Hungry and thirsty, their spirits failed. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he rescued them from their distress. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He led them by the right path to go to a city where they could live. | 7He led them in a straight way to find a city where they could live. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and his awesome deeds for mankind. |
For he has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things. | 9He has satisfied the one who thirsts, filling the hungry with what is good. |
Others sat in darkness and gloom--prisoners in cruel chains-- | 10Some sat in deepest darkness, shackled with cruel iron, |
because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the counsel of the Most High. | 11because they had rebelled against the command of God, despising the advice of the Most High. |
He broke their spirits with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. | 12He humbled them through suffering, as they stumbled without a helper. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he saved them from their distress. | 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he delivered them from their distress. |
He brought them out of darkness and gloom and broke their chains apart. | 14And he brought them out from darkness and the shadow of death, shattering their chains. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love, and for his awesome deeds to mankind. |
For he has broken down the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars. | 16For he shattered bronze gates and cut through iron bars. |
Fools suffered affliction because of their rebellious ways and their iniquities. | 17Because of their rebellious ways, fools suffered for their iniquities. |
They loathed all food and came near the gates of death. | 18They loathed all food, and even reached the gates of death. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he saved them from their distress. | 19Yet when they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, he delivered them from certain destruction. |
He sent his word and healed them; he rescued them from the Pit. | 20He issued his command and healed them; he delivered them from their destruction. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love, and for his awesome deeds for mankind. |
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce his works with shouts of joy. | 22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and talk about his works with shouts of joy. |
Others went to sea in ships, conducting trade on the vast water. | 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, who work in the great waters, |
They saw the LORD's works, his wondrous works in the deep. | 24witnessed the works of the LORD— his awesome deeds in the ocean's depth. |
He spoke and raised a stormy wind that stirred up the waves of the sea. | 25He spoke and stirred up a windstorm that made its waves surge. |
Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths, their courage melting away in anguish, | 26The people ascended skyward and descended to the depths, their courage melting away in their peril. |
they reeled and staggered like a drunkard, and all their skill was useless. | 27They reeled and staggered like a drunkard, as all their wisdom became useless. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. | 28Yet when they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, the LORD brought them out of their distress. |
He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. | 29He calmed the storm and its waves quieted down. |
They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet. Then he guided them to the harbor they longed for. | 30So they rejoiced that the waves became quiet, and he led them to their desired haven. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and for his awesome deeds on behalf of mankind. |
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. | 32Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders. |
He turns rivers into desert, springs into thirsty ground, | 33He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into dry ground, |
and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. | 34and a fruitful land into a salty waste, due to the wickedness of its inhabitants. |
He turns a desert into a pool, dry land into springs. | 35He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water. |
He causes the hungry to settle there, and they establish a city where they can live. | 36There he settled the hungry, where they built a city to live in. |
They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest. | 37They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a productive harvest. |
He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; he does not let their livestock decrease. | 38Then he blessed them, and they became numerous; he multiplied their cattle. |
When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow, | 39But they became few in number, and humiliated by continued oppression, agony, and sorrow. |
he pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. | 40Having poured contempt on their nobles, causing them to err aimlessly in the way. |
But he lifts the needy out of their suffering and makes their families multiply like flocks. | 41Yet he lifted the needy from affliction and made them families like a flock. |
The upright see it and rejoice, and all injustice shuts its mouth. | 42The upright see it and rejoice, but the mouth of an evil person is shut. |
Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things and consider the LORD's acts of faithful love. | 43Let whoever is wise observe these things, that they may comprehend the gracious love of the LORD. |
