| 1“Next, have your brother Aaron brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, to serve Me as priests. | 1“Call for your brother, Aaron, and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Set them apart from the rest of the people of Israel so they may minister to me and be my priests. |

| 3You are to instruct all the skilled craftsmen, whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom, to make garments for Aaron’s consecration, so that he may serve Me as priest. | 3Instruct all the skilled craftsmen whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom. Have them make garments for Aaron that will distinguish him as a priest set apart for my service. |
| 4These are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban, and a sash. | 6They are to make the ephod of finely spun linen embroidered with gold, and with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn. | 6“The craftsmen must make the ephod of finely woven linen and skillfully embroider it with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread. |
| 7It shall have two shoulder pieces attached at two of its corners, so it can be fastened. | 7It will consist of two pieces, front and back, joined at the shoulders with two shoulder-pieces. |
| 8And the skillfully woven waistband of the ephod must be of one piece, of the same workmanship—with gold, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and with finely spun linen. | 8The decorative sash will be made of the same materials: finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread. |
| 9Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel: | 9“Take two onyx stones, and engrave on them the names of the tribes of Israel. |
| 10six of their names on one stone and the remaining six on the other, in the order of their birth. | 10Six names will be on each stone, arranged in the order of the births of the original sons of Israel. |
| 11Engrave the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a gem cutter engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in gold filigree settings. | 11Engrave these names on the two stones in the same way a jeweler engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in settings of gold filigree. |
| 12Fasten both stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron will carry these names on his shoulders as a constant reminder whenever he goes before the LORD. |
| 13Fashion gold filigree settings | 13Make the settings of gold filigree, |

| 15You are also to make a breastpiece of judgment with the same workmanship as the ephod. Construct it with gold, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and with finely spun linen. | 15“Then, with great skill and care, make a chestpiece to be worn for seeking a decision from God. Make it to match the ephod, using finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread. |
| 16It must be square when folded over double, a span long and a span wide. | 16Make the chestpiece of a single piece of cloth folded to form a pouch nine inches square. |
| 17And mount on it a setting of gemstones, four rows of stones: In the first row there shall be a ruby, a topaz, and an emerald; | 17Mount four rows of gemstones on it. The first row will contain a red carnelian, a pale-green peridot, and an emerald. |
| 18in the second row a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond; | 18The second row will contain a turquoise, a blue lapis lazuli, and a white moonstone. |
| 19in the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; | 19The third row will contain an orange jacinth, an agate, and a purple amethyst. |
| 20and in the fourth row a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper. Mount these stones in gold filigree settings. | 20The fourth row will contain a blue-green beryl, an onyx, and a green jasper. All these stones will be set in gold filigree. |
| 21The twelve stones are to correspond to the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes. | 21Each stone will represent one of the twelve sons of Israel, and the name of that tribe will be engraved on it like a seal. |
| 22For the breastpiece, make braided chains like cords of pure gold. | 22“To attach the chestpiece to the ephod, make braided cords of pure gold thread. |
| 23You are also to make two gold rings and fasten them to the two corners of the breastpiece. | 23Then make two gold rings and attach them to the top corners of the chestpiece. |
| 24Then fasten the two gold chains to the two gold rings at the corners of the breastpiece, | 24Tie the two gold cords to the two rings on the chestpiece. |
| 25and fasten the other ends of the two chains to the two filigree settings, attaching them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front. | 25Tie the other ends of the cords to the gold settings on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod. |
| 26Make two more gold rings and attach them to the other two corners of the breastpiece, on the inside edge next to the ephod. | 26Then make two more gold rings and attach them to the inside edges of the chestpiece next to the ephod. |
| 27Make two additional gold rings and attach them to the bottom of the two shoulder pieces of the ephod, on its front, near its seam just above its woven waistband. | 27And make two more gold rings and attach them to the front of the ephod, below the shoulder-pieces, just above the knot where the decorative sash is fastened to the ephod. |
| 28The rings of the breastpiece shall be tied to the rings of the ephod with a cord of blue yarn, so that the breastpiece is above the waistband of the ephod and does not swing out from the ephod. | 28Then attach the bottom rings of the chestpiece to the rings on the ephod with blue cords. This will hold the chestpiece securely to the ephod above the decorative sash. |
| 29Whenever Aaron enters the Holy Place, he shall bear the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastpiece of judgment, as a continual reminder before the LORD. | 29“In this way, Aaron will carry the names of the tribes of Israel on the sacred chestpiece over his heart when he goes into the Holy Place. This will be a continual reminder that he represents the people when he comes before the LORD. |
| 30And place the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece of judgment, so that they will also be over Aaron’s heart whenever he comes before the LORD. Aaron will continually carry the judgment of the sons of Israel over his heart before the LORD. | 30Insert the Urim and Thummim into the sacred chestpiece so they will be carried over Aaron’s heart when he goes into the LORD’s presence. In this way, Aaron will always carry over his heart the objects used to determine the LORD’s will for his people whenever he goes in before the LORD. Additional Clothing for the Priests |
| 31You are to make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth, | 31“Make the robe that is worn with the ephod from a single piece of blue cloth, |
| 32with an opening at its top in the center. Around the opening shall be a woven collar with an opening like that of a garment, so that it will not tear. | 32with an opening for Aaron’s head in the middle of it. Reinforce the opening with a woven collar so it will not tear. |
| 33Make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn all the way around the lower hem, with gold bells between them, | 33Make pomegranates out of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and attach them to the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them. |
| 34alternating the gold bells and pomegranates around the lower hem of the robe. | 34The gold bells and pomegranates are to alternate all around the hem. |
| 35Aaron must wear the robe whenever he ministers, and its sound will be heard when he enters or exits the sanctuary before the LORD, so that he will not die. | 35Aaron will wear this robe whenever he ministers before the LORD, and the bells will tinkle as he goes in and out of the LORD’s presence in the Holy Place. If he wears it, he will not die. |
| 36You are to make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it as on a seal: HOLY TO THE LORD. | 36“Next make a medallion of pure gold, and engrave it like a seal with these words: Holy to the Lord . |
| 37Fasten to it a blue cord to mount it on the turban; it shall be on the front of the turban. | 37Attach the medallion with a blue cord to the front of Aaron’s turban, where it must remain. |
| 38And it will be worn on Aaron’s forehead, so that he may bear the iniquity of the holy things that the sons of Israel consecrate with regard to all their holy gifts. It shall always be on his forehead, so that they may be acceptable before the LORD. | 38Aaron must wear it on his forehead so he may take on himself any guilt of the people of Israel when they consecrate their sacred offerings. He must always wear it on his forehead so the LORD will accept the people. |
| 39You are to weave the tunic with fine linen, make the turban of fine linen, and fashion an embroidered sash. | 39“Weave Aaron’s patterned tunic from fine linen cloth. Fashion the turban from this linen as well. Also make a sash, and decorate it with colorful embroidery. |
| 40Make tunics, sashes, and headbands for Aaron’s sons, to give them glory and splendor. | 40“For Aaron’s sons, make tunics, sashes, and special head coverings that are glorious and beautiful. |
| 41After you put these garments on your brother Aaron and his sons, anoint them, ordain them, and consecrate them so that they may serve Me as priests. | 41Clothe your brother, Aaron, and his sons with these garments, and then anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them so they can serve as my priests. |
| 42Make linen undergarments to cover their bare flesh, extending from waist to thigh. | 42Also make linen undergarments for them, to be worn next to their bodies, reaching from their hips to their thighs. |
| 43Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they will not incur guilt and die. This is to be a permanent statute for Aaron and his descendants. | 43These must be worn whenever Aaron and his sons enter the Tabernacle or approach the altar in the Holy Place to perform their priestly duties. Then they will not incur guilt and die. This is a permanent law for Aaron and all his descendants after him. |
