| 1Now the LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, | 1While the Israelites were still in the land of Egypt, the LORD gave the following instructions to Moses and Aaron: |
| 2“This month is the beginning of months for you; it shall be the first month of your year. | 2“From now on, this month will be the first month of the year for you. |
| 3Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man must select a lamb for his family, one per household. | 3Announce to the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each family must choose a lamb or a young goat for a sacrifice, one animal for each household. |
| 4If the household is too small for a whole lamb, they are to share with the nearest neighbor based on the number of people, and apportion the lamb accordingly. | 4If a family is too small to eat a whole animal, let them share with another family in the neighborhood. Divide the animal according to the size of each family and how much they can eat. |
| 5Your lamb must be an unblemished year-old male, and you may take it from the sheep or the goats. | 5The animal you select must be a one-year-old male, either a sheep or a goat, with no defects. |
| 6You must keep it until the fourteenth day of the month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel will slaughter the animals at twilight. | 6“Take special care of this chosen animal until the evening of the fourteenth day of this first month. Then the whole assembly of the community of Israel must slaughter their lamb or young goat at twilight. |
| 7They are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. | 7They are to take some of the blood and smear it on the sides and top of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the animal. |
| 8They are to eat the meat that night, roasted over the fire, along with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. | 8That same night they must roast the meat over a fire and eat it along with bitter salad greens and bread made without yeast. |
| 9Do not eat any of the meat raw or cooked in boiling water, but only roasted over the fire—its head and legs and inner parts. | 9Do not eat any of the meat raw or boiled in water. The whole animal—including the head, legs, and internal organs—must be roasted over a fire. |
| 10Do not leave any of it until morning; before the morning you must burn up any part that is left over. | 10Do not leave any of it until the next morning. Burn whatever is not eaten before morning. |
| 11This is how you are to eat it: You must be fully dressed for travel, with your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. You are to eat in haste; it is the LORD’s Passover. | 11“These are your instructions for eating this meal: Be fully dressed, wear your sandals, and carry your walking stick in your hand. Eat the meal with urgency, for this is the LORD’s Passover. |
| 12On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn male, both man and beast, and I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. | 12On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn son and firstborn male animal in the land of Egypt. I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt, for I am the LORD! |
| 13The blood on the houses where you are staying will distinguish them; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will fall on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. | 13But the blood on your doorposts will serve as a sign, marking the houses where you are staying. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. This plague of death will not touch you when I strike the land of Egypt. |
| 14And this day will be a memorial for you, and you are to celebrate it as a feast to the LORD, as a permanent statute for the generations to come. | 14“This is a day to remember. Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the LORD. This is a law for all time. |
| 15For seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the first day you are to remove the leaven from your houses. Whoever eats anything leavened from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel. | 15For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast. On the first day of the festival, remove every trace of yeast from your homes. Anyone who eats bread made with yeast during the seven days of the festival will be cut off from the community of Israel. |
| 16On the first day you are to hold a sacred assembly, and another on the seventh day. You must not do any work on those days, except to prepare the meals—that is all you may do. | 16On the first day of the festival and again on the seventh day, all the people must observe an official day for holy assembly. No work of any kind may be done on these days except in the preparation of food. |
| 17So you are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your divisions out of the land of Egypt. You must keep this day as a permanent statute for the generations to come. | 17“Celebrate this Festival of Unleavened Bread, for it will remind you that I brought your forces out of the land of Egypt on this very day. This festival will be a permanent law for you; celebrate this day from generation to generation. |
| 18In the first month you are to eat unleavened bread, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. | 18The bread you eat must be made without yeast from the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month until the evening of the twenty-first day of that month. |
| 19For seven days there must be no leaven found in your houses. If anyone eats something leavened, that person, whether a foreigner or native of the land, must be cut off from the congregation of Israel. | 19During those seven days, there must be no trace of yeast in your homes. Anyone who eats anything made with yeast during this week will be cut off from the community of Israel. These regulations apply both to the foreigners living among you and to the native-born Israelites. |
| 20You are not to eat anything leavened; eat unleavened bread in all your homes.” | 20During those days you must not eat anything made with yeast. Wherever you live, eat only bread made without yeast.” |
| 21Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and told them, “Go at once and select for yourselves a lamb for each family, and slaughter the Passover lamb. | 21Then Moses called all the elders of Israel together and said to them, “Go, pick out a lamb or young goat for each of your families, and slaughter the Passover animal. |
| 22Take a cluster of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin, and brush the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out the door of his house until morning. | 22Drain the blood into a basin. Then take a bundle of hyssop branches and dip it into the blood. Brush the hyssop across the top and sides of the doorframes of your houses. And no one may go out through the door until morning. |
| 23When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians, He will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway; so He will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down. | 23For the LORD will pass through the land to strike down the Egyptians. But when he sees the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, the LORD will pass over your home. He will not permit his death angel to enter your house and strike you down. |
| 24And you are to keep this command as a permanent statute for you and your descendants. | 24“Remember, these instructions are a permanent law that you and your descendants must observe forever. |
| 25When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as He promised, you are to keep this service. | 25When you enter the land the LORD has promised to give you, you will continue to observe this ceremony. |
| 26When your children ask you, ‘What does this service mean to you?’ | 26Then your children will ask, ‘What does this ceremony mean?’ |
| 27you are to reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when He struck down the Egyptians and spared our homes.’ ” Then the people bowed down and worshiped. | 27And you will reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. And though he struck the Egyptians, he spared our families.’” When Moses had finished speaking, all the people bowed down to the ground and worshiped. |
| 28And the Israelites went and did just what the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron. | 28So the people of Israel did just as the LORD had commanded through Moses and Aaron. |
| 29Now at midnight the LORD struck down every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on his throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner in the dungeon, as well as all the firstborn among the livestock. | 29And that night at midnight, the LORD struck down all the firstborn sons in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sat on his throne, to the firstborn son of the prisoner in the dungeon. Even the firstborn of their livestock were killed. |
| 30During the night Pharaoh got up—he and all his officials and all the Egyptians—and there was loud wailing in Egypt; for there was no house without someone dead. | 30Pharaoh and all his officials and all the people of Egypt woke up during the night, and loud wailing was heard throughout the land of Egypt. | 31Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron by night and said, “Get up, leave my people, both you and the Israelites! Go, worship the LORD as you have requested. | 31Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron during the night. “Get out!” he ordered. “Leave my people—and take the rest of the Israelites with you! Go and worship the LORD as you have requested. |
| 32Take your flocks and herds as well, just as you have said, and depart! And bless me also.” | 32Take your flocks and herds, as you said, and be gone. Go, but bless me as you leave.” |
| 33And in order to send them out of the land quickly, the Egyptians urged the people on. “For otherwise,” they said, “we are all going to die!” | 33All the Egyptians urged the people of Israel to get out of the land as quickly as possible, for they thought, “We will all die!” |
| 34So the people took their dough before it was leavened, carrying it on their shoulders in kneading bowls wrapped in clothing. | 34The Israelites took their bread dough before yeast was added. They wrapped their kneading boards in their cloaks and carried them on their shoulders. |
| 35Furthermore, the Israelites acted on Moses’ word and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold, and for clothing. | 35And the people of Israel did as Moses had instructed; they asked the Egyptians for clothing and articles of silver and gold. |
| 36And the LORD gave the people such favor in the sight of the Egyptians that they granted their request. In this way they plundered the Egyptians. | 36The LORD caused the Egyptians to look favorably on the Israelites, and they gave the Israelites whatever they asked for. So they stripped the Egyptians of their wealth! |
| 37The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Succoth with about 600,000 men on foot, besides women and children. | 37That night the people of Israel left Rameses and started for Succoth. There were about 600,000 men, plus all the women and children. |
| 38And a mixed multitude also went up with them, along with great droves of livestock, both flocks and herds. | 38A rabble of non-Israelites went with them, along with great flocks and herds of livestock. |
| 39Since their dough had no leaven, the people baked what they had brought out of Egypt into unleavened loaves. For when they had been driven out of Egypt, they could not delay and had not prepared any provisions for themselves. | 39For bread they baked flat cakes from the dough without yeast they had brought from Egypt. It was made without yeast because the people were driven out of Egypt in such a hurry that they had no time to prepare the bread or other food. |
| 40Now the duration of the Israelites’ stay in Egypt was 430 years. | 40The people of Israel had lived in Egypt for 430 years. |
| 41At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the LORD’s divisions went out of the land of Egypt. | 41In fact, it was on the last day of the 430th year that all the LORD’s forces left the land. |
| 42Because the LORD kept a vigil that night to bring them out of the land of Egypt, this same night is to be a vigil to the LORD, to be observed by all the Israelites for the generations to come. | 42On this night the LORD kept his promise to bring his people out of the land of Egypt. So this night belongs to him, and it must be commemorated every year by all the Israelites, from generation to generation. Instructions for the Passover |
| 43And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the statute of the Passover: No foreigner is to eat of it. | 43Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “These are the instructions for the festival of Passover. No outsiders are allowed to eat the Passover meal. |
| 44But any slave who has been purchased may eat of it, after you have circumcised him. | 44But any slave who has been purchased may eat it if he has been circumcised. |
| 45A temporary resident or hired hand shall not eat the Passover. | 45Temporary residents and hired servants may not eat it. |
| 46It must be eaten inside one house. You are not to take any of the meat outside the house, and you may not break any of the bones. | 46Each Passover lamb must be eaten in one house. Do not carry any of its meat outside, and do not break any of its bones. |
| 47The whole congregation of Israel must celebrate it. | 47The whole community of Israel must celebrate this Passover festival. |
| 48If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate the LORD’s Passover, all the males in the household must be circumcised; then he may come near to celebrate it, and he shall be like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised man may eat of it. | 48“If there are foreigners living among you who want to celebrate the LORD’s Passover, let all their males be circumcised. Only then may they celebrate the Passover with you like any native-born Israelite. But no uncircumcised male may ever eat the Passover meal. |
| 49The same law shall apply to both the native and the foreigner who resides among you.” | 49This instruction applies to everyone, whether a native-born Israelite or a foreigner living among you.” |
| 50Then all the Israelites did this—they did just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron. | 50So all the people of Israel followed all the LORD’s commands to Moses and Aaron. |
| 51And on that very day the LORD brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by their divisions. | 51On that very day the LORD brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt like an army. |
