In those days the crowd once again became very large, and they had nothing to eat. Jesus called the disciples to Him and said, | 1In those days there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. He called the disciples and said to them, |
“I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. | 2"I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. |
If I send them home hungry, they will faint along the way. For some of them have come a great distance.” | 3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a long distance." |
His disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could anyone find enough bread to feed all these people?” | 4His disciples answered him, "Where can anyone get enough bread here in this desolate place to feed these people?" |
“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied. | 5"How many loaves do you have?" he asked them. "Seven," they said. |
And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then He took the seven loaves, gave thanks and broke them, and gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And they distributed them to the crowd. | 6He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people. So they served them to the crowd. |
They also had a few small fish, and Jesus blessed them and ordered that these be set before them as well. | 7They also had a few small fish, and after he had blessed them, he said these were to be served as well. |
The people ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. | 8They ate and were satisfied. Then they collected seven large baskets of leftover pieces. |
And about four thousand men were present. As soon as Jesus had dismissed the crowd, | 9About four thousand were there. He dismissed them. |
He got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha. | 10And he immediately got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha. |
Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, testing Him by demanding from Him a sign from heaven. | 11The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, demanding of him a sign from heaven to test him. |
Jesus sighed deeply in His spirit and said, “Why does this generation demand a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.” | 12Sighing deeply in his spirit, he said, "Why does this generation demand a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation." |
And He left them, got back into the boat, and crossed to the other side. | 13Then he left them, got back into the boat, and went to the other side. |
Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. | 14The disciples had forgotten to take bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat. |
“Watch out!” He cautioned them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod.” | 15Then he gave them strict orders: "Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod." |
So they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread. | 16They were discussing among themselves that they did not have any bread. |
Aware of their conversation, Jesus asked them, “Why are you debating about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Do you have such hard hearts? | 17Aware of this, he said to them, "Why are you discussing the fact you have no bread? Don't you understand or comprehend? Do you have hardened hearts? |
‘Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?’ And do you not remember? | 18Do you have eyes and not see; do you have ears and not hear? And do you not remember? |
When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Twelve,” they answered. | 19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of leftovers did you collect?" "Twelve," they told him. |
“And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Seven,” they said. | 20"When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you collect?" "Seven," they said. |
Then He asked them, “Do you still not understand?” | 21And he said to them, "Don't you understand yet?" |
When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. | 22They came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him. |
So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then He spit on the man’s eyes and placed His hands on him. “Can you see anything?” He asked. | 23He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, he asked him, "Do you see anything?" |
The man looked up and said, “I can see the people, but they look like trees walking around.” | 24He looked up and said, "I see people--they look like trees walking." |
Once again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and when he opened them his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly. | 25Again Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes. The man looked intently and his sight was restored and he saw everything clearly. |
Jesus sent him home and said, “Do not go back into the village.” | 26Then he sent him home, saying, "Don't even go into the village." |
Then Jesus and His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way, He questioned His disciples: “Who do people say I am?” | 27Jesus went out with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the road he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" |
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” | 28They answered him, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets." |
“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” | 29"But you," he asked them, "who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." |
And Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about Him. | 30And he strictly warned them to tell no one about him. |
Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and after three days rise again. | 31Then he began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. |
He spoke this message quite frankly, and Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. | 32He spoke openly about this. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. |
But Jesus, turning and looking at His disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” | 33But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God's concerns but human concerns." |
Then Jesus called the crowd to Him along with His disciples, and He told them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. | 34Calling the crowd along with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. |
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and for the gospel will save it. | 35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me and the gospel will save it. |
What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? | 36For what does it benefit someone to gain the whole world and yet lose his life? |
Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? | 37What can anyone give in exchange for his life? |
If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father’s glory with the holy angels.” | 38For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." |
