Jesus Sends Out the Disciples

1Now after these things, the Lord also appointed seventy-twoa others and sent them in two by two before His face, into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. 2And He was saying to them, “The harvest is indeed plentiful, but the workmen are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest, that He may send out workmen into His harvest.

3Go; behold, I send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4Carry no purse, nor bag, nor sandals; and greet no one on the road.

5And into whatever house you might enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon it; but if not so, it will return to you. 7And remain in the same house, eating and drinking the things supplied by them; for the workman is worthy of his wages.b Do not move from house to house.

8And into whatever city you might enter and they receive you, eat the things set before you. 9And heal the sick in it, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’

10And into whatever city you might enter and they do not receive you, having gone out into its streets, say, 11‘Even the dust from your city having clung to our feet, we wipe off against you; yet know this, that the kingdom of God has drawn near.’ 12I say to you that it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.

Woe to the Unrepentant
(Matthew 11:20-24)

13Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles having taken place in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. 15And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades.

16The one hearing you hears Me; and the one rejecting you rejects Me; and the one rejecting Me rejects the One having sent Me.”

The Joyful Return

17And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us through Your name.”

18And He said to them, “I beheld Satan having fallen as lightning out of heaven. 19Behold, I give you the authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20Yet do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subjected to you; but rejoice that your names are written in the heavens.”

Jesus' Prayer of Thanksgiving
(Matthew 11:25-30)

21In the same hour, He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I fully consent to You, Father, Lord of the heaven and of the earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for thus was it well-pleasing before You.

22All things have been delivered to Me by My Father. And no one knows who the Son is, except the Father; and who the Father is, except the Son, and those to whom the Son might resolve to reveal Him.”

23And having turned to the disciples, He said in private, “Blessed are the eyes seeing what you see! 24For I say to you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see; and to hear what you hear, and did not hear.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25And behold, a certain lawyer stood up, testing Him, saying, “Teacher, what having done, will I inherit eternal life?”

26And He said to him, “What has been written in the Law? How do you read it?”

27And answering, he said, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind’c and ‘Your neighbor as yourself.’d”

28And He said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.”

29But desiring to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30Jesus having taken it up, then said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, who both having stripped him and having inflicted wounds, went away having left him half dead.

31Now by chance a certain priest was going down on that road, and having seen him, he passed by on the opposite side.

32And likewise also a Levite having come to the spot, and having seen him, passed by on the opposite side.

33But a certain Samaritan journeying came to him, and having seen him was moved with compassion, 34and having approached Him, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and having put him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn and took care of him.

35And on the next day, having taken out two denarii,e he gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you might expend, I will repay you on my returning.’

36Which of these three seems to you to have been a neighbor of the one having fallen among the robbers?”

37And he said, “The one having shown compassion toward him.”

Then Jesus said to him, “You go and do likewise.”

Martha and Mary

38Now in their proceeding, He entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received Him into the home. 39And she had a sister called Mary, who also, having sat down at the feet of the Lord, was listening to His word. 40But Martha was distracted about much service; and having come up, she said, “Lord, is it not concerning to You that my sister has left me alone to serve? Therefore speak to her, that she might help me!”

41And the Lord answering said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; 42but one thing is necessary, only one; for Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
