The Ministry of the Twelve
(Matthew 10:5-15; Mark 6:7-13)

1And having called together the Twelve, He gave to them power and authority over all the demons, and to heal diseases, 2and He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money, nor two tunics apiece to have. 4And into whatever house you might enter, remain there, and go forth from there. 5And as many as might not receive you, going forth from that city, shake off the dust from your feet, as a testimony against them.”

6And going forth, they were passing through the villages, proclaiming the gospel and healing everywhere.

Herod Desires to See Jesus
(Matthew 14:1-12; Mark 6:14-29)

7And Herod the Tetrarch heard of all the things being done, and was perplexed, because it was said by some that John has been raised out from the dead, 8and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that a prophet of the ancients had arisen.

9And Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this concerning whom I hear such things?” And he was seeking to see Him.

The Feeding of the Five Thousand
(Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; John 6:1-15)

10And having returned, the apostles related to Him whatever they had done. And having taken them, He withdrew by Himself into a town called Bethsaida. 11And the crowds having known it, followed Him; and having received them, He was speaking to them concerning the kingdom of God, and He was healing those having need of healing.

12And the day began to decline, and the Twelve having come, said to Him, “Dismiss the crowd, that having gone into the surrounding villages and countryside, they might lodge and might find provisions; for we are in a desolate place here.”

13And He said to them, “You give to them to eat.”

But they said, “There are no more than five loaves to us, and two fish, unless we, having gone, should buy food for all this people.” 14For they were about five thousand men.

And He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty.” 15And they did so and made all sit down.

16And having taken the five loaves and the two fish, having looked up to the heaven, He blessed and broke them, and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd.

17And they all ate and were satisfied; and that having been a surplus to them was taken up, twelve hand-baskets of fragments.

Peter's Confession of Christ
(Matthew 16:13-20; Mark 8:27-30; John 6:66-71)

18And it came to pass as He was praying in solitary, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Whom do the crowds pronounce Me to be?”

19And answering, they said, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, that a prophet, one of the ancients, has arisen.”

20And He said to them, “But whom do you pronounce Me to be?”

And Peter answering said, “The Christ of God.”

Christ's Passion Foretold
(Matthew 16:21-23; Mark 8:31-33)

21And having strictly warned them, He instructed them to tell this to no one, 22having said, “It is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and to be killed, and on the third day to be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross
(Matthew 10:37-39; Matthew 16:24-28; Mark 8:34-38)

23And He was saying to all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and let him take up his cross every day, and let him follow Me. 24For whoever might desire to save his life will lose it; but whoever might lose his life on account of me, he will save it.

25For what is a man profited, having gained the whole world, and having destroyed or having suffered the loss of himself? 26For whoever may have been ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He shall come in His glory, and that of the Father and of the holy angels. 27And I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who shall not taste of death until they shall have seen the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration
(Matthew 17:1-13; Mark 9:1-13; 2 Peter 1:16-21)

28And it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, and having taken Peter and John and James, He went up on the mountain to pray. 29And it came to pass in His praying, the appearance of His face was altered, and His clothing became dazzling white. 30And behold, two men began talking with Him, who were Moses and Elijah. 31Those having appeared in glory were speaking of His going out, which He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.

32And Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and having awoken fully, they saw His glory, and the two men standing with Him. 33And it came to pass in their departing from Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make also three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he is saying.

34And as he is saying these things, a cloud came and was overshadowing them; and they feared in their entering into the cloud. 35And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son,a whom I have chosen; listen to Him!” 36And as the voice occurred, Jesus was found alone. And they were silent, and they told to no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

The Boy with an Evil Spirit
(Matthew 17:14-21; Mark 9:14-29; Luke 17:5-10)

37And it came to pass the next day, on their having come down from the mountain, a great crowd met Him. 38And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I implore You to look upon my son, for he is an only child to me. 39And behold, a spirit takes him, and suddenly he cries out, and it throws him into convulsions with foaming, and with difficulty it departs from him, crushing him. 40And I begged Your disciples that they might cast it out, and they were not able.”

41And Jesus answering said, “O unbelieving and perverted generation, until when will I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”

42And while he was coming near, the demon threw him down, and threw him into convulsions. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

The Second Prediction of the Passion
(Matthew 17:22-23; Mark 9:30-32)

43And all were astonished at the majesty of God.

But of all wondering at all that He did, He said to His disciples, 44“You let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” 45But they did not understand this saying, and it was veiled from them, that they should not understand it. And they were afraid to ask Him concerning this saying.

The Greatest in the Kingdom
(Matthew 18:1-6; Mark 9:33-37)

46And an argument came up among them, which of them might be greatest. 47But Jesus, having known the reasoning of their heart, having taken hold of a child, set it by Him, 48and He said to them, “Whoever shall receive this child in My name, receives Me; and whoever shall receive Me, receives the One having sent Me. For the one being least among you all, he shall be great.”

49And John answering said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we were forbidding him, because he does not follow with us.”

50And Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid it; for whoever is not against us is for us.”

The Samaritans Reject Jesus

51And it came to pass in the completing of the days of His ascension, that He steadfastly set the face to go to Jerusalem. 52And He sent messengers before His face. And having gone, they entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to make ready for Him. 53And they did not receive Him, because His face was going toward Jerusalem.

54And the disciples James and John having seen it, said, “Lord, will You that we should call fire to come down from heaven and to consume them?”b

55And having turned, He rebuked them,c 56and they went to another village.

The Cost of Discipleship
(Matthew 8:18-22; Luke 14:25-33; John 6:60-65)

57And as they were going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You may go.”

58And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere He might lay the head.”

59And He said to another, “Follow Me.”

But he said, “Lord, allow me first, having gone away, to bury my father.”

60And He said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but you, having gone forth, declare the kingdom of God.”

61And another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first allow me to bid farewell to those at my home.”

62And Jesus said to him, “No one having laid the hand upon the plow, and looking on the things behind, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
