The name Shallum means "retribution" or "recompense" in Hebrew. Below are the notable figures named Shallum in the Bible:1. Shallum, King of Israel: Shallum, the son of Jabesh, briefly reigned as the king of Israel. His reign lasted only one month in Samaria, around 752 BC. He assassinated King Zechariah, the son of Jeroboam II, thus ending the dynasty of Jehu. Shallum's short-lived rule came to an abrupt end when he was killed by Menahem, who then took the throne. This event is recorded in 2 Kings 15:10-14: "Then Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah, struck him down in front of the people, and killed him. And he reigned in his place." 2. Shallum, the Father of Maaseiah: This Shallum is mentioned in the context of the reforms of King Josiah. He is identified as the father of Maaseiah, a governor of Jerusalem, who played a role in the religious reforms initiated by Josiah. This is noted in 2 Chronicles 34:8: "In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, to purify the land and the temple, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah son of Joahaz the recorder to repair the house of the LORD his God." 3. Shallum, the Husband of Huldah the Prophetess: Shallum was the husband of Huldah, a prophetess during the reign of King Josiah. Huldah is known for her role in authenticating the Book of the Law found in the temple. Shallum is described as the "keeper of the wardrobe," indicating a position of responsibility. This is found in 2 Kings 22:14: "So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, the keeper of the wardrobe." 4. Shallum, a Descendant of Simeon: In the genealogies of the tribes of Israel, Shallum is listed as a descendant of Simeon. This reference is found in 1 Chronicles 4:25: "Shallum was his son, Mibsam his son, and Mishma his son." 5. Shallum, a Gatekeeper: Another Shallum is mentioned as a gatekeeper in the temple during the time of King David. He is noted for his role in the service of the house of the LORD. This is recorded in 1 Chronicles 9:17-19: "The gatekeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their fellow Levites. Shallum was their chief." 6. Shallum, the Son of Kore: This Shallum is identified as a Levite and a gatekeeper of the tabernacle. He is noted for his faithful service and is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 9:19: "Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his fellow gatekeepers from his family, the Korahites, were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the Tent, just as their fathers had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the dwelling of the LORD." The various individuals named Shallum highlight the commonality of the name in ancient Israel and reflect a range of roles from kingship to religious service. Each Shallum played a part in the unfolding narrative of Israel's history as recorded in the Scriptures. Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary ShallumSmith's Bible Dictionary Shallum(retribution).

Easton's Bible Dictionary Retribution. (1.) The son of Jabesh, otherwise unknown. He "conspired against Zachariah, and smote him before the people, and slew him, and reigned in his stead" (2 Kings 15:10). He reigned only "a month of days in Samaria" (15:13, marg.). Menahem rose up against Shallum and put him to death (2 Kings 15:14, 15, 17), and became king in his stead. (2.) Keeper of the temple vestments in the reign of Josiah (2 Kings 22:14). (3.) One of the posterity of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:40, 41). (4.) A descendant of Simeon (1 Chronicles 4:25). (5.) One of the line of the high priests (1 Chronicles 6:13). (6.) 1 Chronicles 7:13. (7.) A keeper of the gate in the reign of David (1 Chronicles 9:17). (8.) A Levite porter (1 Chronicles 9:19, 31; Jeremiah 35:4). (9.) An Ephraimite chief (2 Chronicles 28:12). (10.) The uncle of the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 32:7). (11.) A son of king Josiah (1 Chronicles 3:15; Jeremiah 22:11), who was elected to succeed his father on the throne, although he was two years younger than his brother Eliakim. He assumed the crown under the name of Jehoahaz (q.v.). He did not imitate the example of his father (2 Kings 23:32), but was "a young lion, and it learned to catch the prey; it devoured men" (Ezek. 19:3). His policy was anti-Egyptian therefore. Necho, at that time at Riblah, sent an army against Jerusalem, which at once yielded, and Jehoahaz was carried captive to the Egyptian camp, Eliakim being appointed king in his stead. He remained a captive in Egypt till his death, and was the first king of Judah that died in exile. International Standard Bible Encyclopedia SHALLUM (1)shal'-um (shallum, shallum; various forms in the Septuagint): This is the name of not less than 12 Hebrew persons: SHALLUM (2) (shallum, shallum, "the requited one" (2 Kings 15:10-15)): The 15th king of Israel, and successor of Zechariah, whom he publicly assassinated in the 7th month of his reign. Nothing more is known of Shallum than that he was a son of Jabesh, which may indicate that he was a Gileadite from beyond Jordan. He is said to have made "a conspiracy" against Zechariah, so was not alone in his crime. The conspirators, however, had but a short-lived success, as, when Shallum had "reigned for the space of a month in Samaria," Menahem, then at Tirzah, one of the minor capitals of the kingdom, went up to Samaria, slew him and took his place.
