The term "assassinated" refers to the deliberate and premeditated killing of a prominent or important individual, often for political or ideological reasons. While the Bible does not use the term "assassinated" explicitly, it records several instances of such acts, particularly in the context of Israel's monarchy and leadership.

Biblical Instances of Assassination:

1. Eglon, King of Moab: One of the earliest recorded assassinations in the Bible is that of Eglon, the king of Moab. Ehud, a judge of Israel, assassinated Eglon as part of God's deliverance of Israel from Moabite oppression. Ehud crafted a double-edged sword and, under the guise of delivering a secret message, killed Eglon in his private chamber (Judges 3:15-26).

2. Ish-bosheth, Son of Saul: Ish-bosheth, the son of King Saul, was assassinated by two of his own captains, Rechab and Baanah. They entered his house during the heat of the day while he was resting and struck him dead. They then brought his head to David, expecting a reward, but David condemned their treachery and had them executed (2 Samuel 4:5-12).

3. Amasa, Commander of Judah's Army: Amasa, appointed by Absalom and later by David as commander of the army, was assassinated by Joab. Joab, who had been replaced by Amasa, deceitfully greeted him with a kiss and then struck him with a sword, killing him (2 Samuel 20:8-10).

4. Nadab, King of Israel: Nadab, the son of Jeroboam, was assassinated by Baasha during a military campaign against the Philistines. Baasha then took the throne of Israel and fulfilled the prophecy against the house of Jeroboam by exterminating his entire family (1 Kings 15:27-29).

5. Joash, King of Judah: Joash, who initially followed the ways of the Lord under the guidance of Jehoiada the priest, later turned to idolatry. He was assassinated by his own servants in a conspiracy at the house of Millo (2 Kings 12:20-21).

Theological Implications:

The Bible presents these acts of assassination within the broader narrative of God's sovereignty and justice. While human agents carried out these acts, often driven by personal ambition or political gain, the biblical text sometimes portrays them as instruments of divine judgment. For instance, the assassination of Eglon by Ehud is depicted as a deliverance orchestrated by God (Judges 3:15-30).

However, the Bible also condemns treachery and murder, as seen in David's response to the assassination of Ish-bosheth. David's execution of Rechab and Baanah underscores the biblical principle that God abhors violence and treachery, even when it appears to serve a political or divine purpose (2 Samuel 4:9-12).

Moral and Ethical Considerations:

From a moral and ethical standpoint, the Bible consistently upholds the sanctity of life and the rule of law. The commandment "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13) reflects God's desire for justice and order. Assassination, as a form of murder, is contrary to God's law and is often depicted as an act of betrayal and sin.

In summary, while the Bible records instances of assassination, it does so within the context of divine justice and human sinfulness. These narratives serve as a reminder of the complexities of human leadership and the ultimate sovereignty of God over the affairs of nations and individuals.
