Envy: General Scriptures Concerning

Topical Encyclopedia
Envy is a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, or possessions. It is often considered a destructive emotion that can lead to further sin and discord among individuals and communities. The Bible addresses envy in various contexts, warning against its dangers and encouraging believers to cultivate contentment and love instead.

Old Testament References

1. Genesis 4:4-5 · The account of Cain and Abel illustrates the destructive power of envy. Cain's envy of Abel's favorable offering led to the first murder. "And Abel brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell."

2. Proverbs 14:30 · Envy is described as rottenness to the bones, highlighting its corrosive nature. "A tranquil heart is life to the body, but envy rots the bones."

3. Ecclesiastes 4:4 · The pursuit of success driven by envy is deemed futile. "I have seen that every labor and every success is the result of rivalry between a man and his neighbor. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind."

New Testament References

1. Mark 15:10 · Envy is identified as the motive behind the chief priests' actions against Jesus. "For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Him over."

2. Romans 1:29 · Envy is listed among the sins that characterize those who have turned away from God. "They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice."

3. Galatians 5:19-21 · Envy is included in the works of the flesh, which are contrary to the Spirit. "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."

4. James 3:14-16 · Envy is associated with disorder and every evil practice. "But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice."

Exhortations Against Envy

1. 1 Corinthians 13:4 · Love, the highest Christian virtue, is contrasted with envy. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud."

2. 1 Peter 2:1 · Believers are urged to rid themselves of envy. "Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander."

3. Philippians 2:3 · Christians are encouraged to act out of humility rather than envy. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves."

The biblical perspective on envy is clear: it is a harmful emotion that leads to sin and discord. Believers are called to reject envy and instead embrace love, humility, and contentment, reflecting the character of Christ in their lives.
