New Living Translation | NET Bible |
My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help? | 1For the music director; according to the tune "Morning Doe;" a psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I groan in prayer, but help seems far away. |
Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief. | 2My God, I cry out during the day, but you do not answer, and during the night my prayers do not let up. |
Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. | 3You are holy; you sit as king receiving the praises of Israel. |
Our ancestors trusted in you, and you rescued them. | 4In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted in you and you rescued them. |
They cried out to you and were saved. They trusted in you and were never disgraced. | 5To you they cried out, and they were saved; in you they trusted and they were not disappointed. |
But I am a worm and not a man. I am scorned and despised by all! | 6But I am a worm, not a man; people insult me and despise me. |
Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying, | 7All who see me taunt me; they mock me and shake their heads. |
“Is this the one who relies on the LORD? Then let the LORD save him! If the LORD loves him so much, let the LORD rescue him!” | 8They say, "Commit yourself to the LORD! Let the LORD rescue him! Let the LORD deliver him, for he delights in him." |
Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast. | 9Yes, you are the one who brought me out from the womb and made me feel secure on my mother's breasts. |
I was thrust into your arms at my birth. You have been my God from the moment I was born. | 10I have been dependent on you since birth; from the time I came out of my mother's womb you have been my God. |
Do not stay so far from me, for trouble is near, and no one else can help me. | 11Do not remain far away from me, for trouble is near and I have no one to help me. |
My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls; fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in! | 12Many bulls surround me; powerful bulls of Bashan hem me in. |
Like lions they open their jaws against me, roaring and tearing into their prey. | 13They open their mouths to devour me like a roaring lion that rips its prey. |
My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me. | 14My strength drains away like water; all my bones are dislocated; my heart is like wax; it melts away inside me. |
My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead. | 15The roof of my mouth is as dry as a piece of pottery; my tongue sticks to my gums. You set me in the dust of death. |
My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet. | 16Yes, wild dogs surround me--a gang of evil men crowd around me; like a lion they pin my hands and feet. |
I can count all my bones. My enemies stare at me and gloat. | 17I can count all my bones; my enemies are gloating over me in triumph. |
They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing. | 18They are dividing up my clothes among themselves; they are rolling dice for my garments. |
O LORD, do not stay far away! You are my strength; come quickly to my aid! | 19But you, O LORD, do not remain far away! You are my source of strength! Hurry and help me! |
Save me from the sword; spare my precious life from these dogs. | 20Deliver me from the sword! Save my life from the claws of the wild dogs! |
Snatch me from the lion’s jaws and from the horns of these wild oxen. | 21Rescue me from the mouth of the lion, and from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered me! |
I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people. | 22I will declare your name to my countrymen! In the middle of the assembly I will praise you! |
Praise the LORD, all you who fear him! Honor him, all you descendants of Jacob! Show him reverence, all you descendants of Israel! | 23You loyal followers of the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him! |
For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy. He has not turned his back on them, but has listened to their cries for help. | 24For he did not despise or detest the suffering of the oppressed; he did not ignore him; when he cried out to him, he responded. |
I will praise you in the great assembly. I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who worship you. | 25You are the reason I offer praise in the great assembly; I will fulfill my promises before the LORD's loyal followers. |
The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the LORD will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy. | 26Let the oppressed eat and be filled! Let those who seek his help praise the LORD! May you live forever! |
The whole earth will acknowledge the LORD and return to him. All the families of the nations will bow down before him. | 27Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the LORD and turn to him! Let all the nations worship you! |
For royal power belongs to the LORD. He rules all the nations. | 28For the LORD is king and rules over the nations. |
Let the rich of the earth feast and worship. Bow before him, all who are mortal, all whose lives will end as dust. | 29All of the thriving people of the earth will join the celebration and worship; all those who are descending into the grave will bow before him, including those who cannot preserve their lives. |
Our children will also serve him. Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord. | 30A whole generation will serve him; they will tell the next generation about the sovereign Lord. |
His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born. They will hear about everything he has done. | 31They will come and tell about his saving deeds; they will tell a future generation what he has accomplished. |
