New Living Translation | NET Bible |
David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. | 1David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. |
He sang: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; | 2He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. |
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence. | 3My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! |
I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies. | 4I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. |
“The waves of death overwhelmed me; floods of destruction swept over me. | 5The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. |
The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path. | 6The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. |
But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I cried to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears. | 7In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. |
“Then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the heavens shook; they quaked because of his anger. | 8The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. |
Smoke poured from his nostrils; fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him. | 9Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. |
He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet. | 10He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. |
Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. | 11He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. |
He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach with dense rain clouds. | 12He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. |
A great brightness shone around him, and burning coals blazed forth. | 13From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. |
The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. | 14The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. |
He shot arrows and scattered his enemies; his lightning flashed, and they were confused. | 15He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. |
Then at the command of the LORD, at the blast of his breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare. | 16The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. |
“He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. | 17He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. |
He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me. | 18He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. |
They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the LORD supported me. | 19They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. |
He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me. | 20He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. |
The LORD rewarded me for doing right; he restored me because of my innocence. | 21The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not turned from my God to follow evil. | 22For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. |
I have followed all his regulations; I have never abandoned his decrees. | 23For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. |
I am blameless before God; I have kept myself from sin. | 24I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. |
The LORD rewarded me for doing right. He has seen my innocence. | 25The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. |
“To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity. | 26You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. |
To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. | 27You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. |
You rescue the humble, but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them. | 28You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. |
O LORD, you are my lamp. The LORD lights up my darkness. | 29Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. |
In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall. | 30Indeed,with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. |
“God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. | 31The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. |
For who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock? | 32Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? |
God is my strong fortress, and he makes my way perfect. | 33The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. |
He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. | 34He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. |
He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. | 35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. |
You have given me your shield of victory; your help has made me great. | 36You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. |
You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping. | 37You widen my path; my feet do not slip. |
“I chased my enemies and destroyed them; I did not stop until they were conquered. | 38I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. |
I consumed them; I struck them down so they did not get up; they fell beneath my feet. | 39I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. |
You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet. | 40You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. |
You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me. | 41You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. |
They looked for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the LORD, but he refused to answer. | 42They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. |
I ground them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trampled them in the gutter like dirt. | 43I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. |
“You gave me victory over my accusers. You preserved me as the ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me. | 44You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. |
Foreign nations cringe before me; as soon as they hear of me, they submit. | 45Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. |
They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds. | 46Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. |
“The LORD lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted! | 47The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! |
He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he brings down the nations under me | 48The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. |
and delivers me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents. | 49He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. |
For this, O LORD, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name. | 50So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. |
You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever.” | 51He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" |
