New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. | 1And David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. |
He sang: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; | 2He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. |
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence. | 3My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation. My stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, You save me from violence. |
I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies. | 4I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies. |
“The waves of death overwhelmed me; floods of destruction swept over me. | 5For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of chaos overwhelmed me. |
The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path. | 6The cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. |
But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I cried to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears. | 7In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried out to my God. And from His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for help reached His ears. |
“Then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the heavens shook; they quaked because of his anger. | 8Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they were shaken because He burned with anger. |
Smoke poured from his nostrils; fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him. | 9Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; glowing coals blazed forth. |
He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet. | 10He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds beneath His feet. |
Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. | 11He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind. |
He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach with dense rain clouds. | 12He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds. |
A great brightness shone around him, and burning coals blazed forth. | 13From the brightness of His presence coals of fire blazed forth. |
The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. | 14The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. |
He shot arrows and scattered his enemies; his lightning flashed, and they were confused. | 15He shot His arrows and scattered the foes; He hurled lightning and routed them. |
Then at the command of the LORD, at the blast of his breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare. | 16The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils. |
“He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. | 17He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters. |
He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me. | 18He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty for me. |
They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the LORD supported me. | 19They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD was my support. |
He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me. | 20He brought me out into the open; He rescued me because He delighted in me. |
The LORD rewarded me for doing right; he restored me because of my innocence. | 21The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not turned from my God to follow evil. | 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God. |
I have followed all his regulations; I have never abandoned his decrees. | 23For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes. |
I am blameless before God; I have kept myself from sin. | 24And I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity. |
The LORD rewarded me for doing right. He has seen my innocence. | 25So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight. |
“To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity. | 26To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless You show Yourself blameless; |
To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. | 27to the pure You show Yourself pure, but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd. |
You rescue the humble, but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them. | 28You save an afflicted people, but Your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. |
O LORD, you are my lamp. The LORD lights up my darkness. | 29For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness. |
In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall. | 30For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall. |
“God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. | 31As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. |
For who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock? | 32For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? |
God is my strong fortress, and he makes my way perfect. | 33God is my strong fortress and He makes my way clear. |
He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. | 34He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights. |
He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. | 35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. |
You have given me your shield of victory; your help has made me great. | 36You have given me Your shield of salvation, and Your gentleness exalts me. |
You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping. | 37You broaden the path beneath me so that my ankles do not give way. |
“I chased my enemies and destroyed them; I did not stop until they were conquered. | 38I pursued my enemies and destroyed them; I did not turn back until they were consumed. |
I consumed them; I struck them down so they did not get up; they fell beneath my feet. | 39I devoured and crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen under my feet. |
You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet. | 40You have armed me with strength for battle; You have subdued my foes beneath me. |
You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me. | 41You have made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who hated me. |
They looked for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the LORD, but he refused to answer. | 42They looked, but there was no one to save them—to the LORD, but He did not answer. |
I ground them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trampled them in the gutter like dirt. | 43I ground them as the dust of the earth; I crushed and trampled them like mud in the streets. |
“You gave me victory over my accusers. You preserved me as the ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me. | 44You have delivered me from the strife of my people; You have preserved me as the head of nations; a people I had not known shall serve me. |
Foreign nations cringe before me; as soon as they hear of me, they submit. | 45Foreigners cower before me; when they hear me, they obey me. |
They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds. | 46Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their strongholds. |
“The LORD lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted! | 47The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock! And may God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted— |
He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he brings down the nations under me | 48the God who avenges me and brings down nations beneath me, |
and delivers me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents. | 49who frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes; You rescue me from violent men. |
For this, O LORD, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name. | 50Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name. |
You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever.” | 51Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows loving devotion to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever.” |
