Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. | 1And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. |
The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” | 2And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? |
Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. | 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. |
Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.” | 4But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. |
And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. | 5And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. |
And he was amazed at their unbelief. Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Disciples Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people. | 6And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching. |
And he called his twelve disciples together and began sending them out two by two, giving them authority to cast out evil spirits. | 7And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; |
He told them to take nothing for their journey except a walking stick—no food, no traveler’s bag, no money. | 8And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: |
He allowed them to wear sandals but not to take a change of clothes. | 9But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. |
“Wherever you go,” he said, “stay in the same house until you leave town. | 10And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. |
But if any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate.” | 11And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. |
So the disciples went out, telling everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God. | 12And they went out, and preached that men should repent. |
And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil. The Death of John the Baptist | 13And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. |
Herod Antipas, the king, soon heard about Jesus, because everyone was talking about him. Some were saying, “This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead. That is why he can do such miracles.” | 14And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. |
Others said, “He’s the prophet Elijah.” Still others said, “He’s a prophet like the other great prophets of the past.” | 15Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. |
When Herod heard about Jesus, he said, “John, the man I beheaded, has come back from the dead.” | 16But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. |
For Herod had sent soldiers to arrest and imprison John as a favor to Herodias. She had been his brother Philip’s wife, but Herod had married her. | 17For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. |
John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry your brother’s wife.” | 18For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. |
So Herodias bore a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But without Herod’s approval she was powerless, | 19Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: |
for Herod respected John; and knowing that he was a good and holy man, he protected him. Herod was greatly disturbed whenever he talked with John, but even so, he liked to listen to him. | 20For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. |
Herodias’s chance finally came on Herod’s birthday. He gave a party for his high government officials, army officers, and the leading citizens of Galilee. | 21And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; |
Then his daughter, also named Herodias, came in and performed a dance that greatly pleased Herod and his guests. “Ask me for anything you like,” the king said to the girl, “and I will give it to you.” | 22And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. |
He even vowed, “I will give you whatever you ask, up to half my kingdom!” | 23And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. |
She went out and asked her mother, “What should I ask for?” Her mother told her, “Ask for the head of John the Baptist!” | 24And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. |
So the girl hurried back to the king and told him, “I want the head of John the Baptist, right now, on a tray!” | 25And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. |
Then the king deeply regretted what he had said; but because of the vows he had made in front of his guests, he couldn’t refuse her. | 26And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. |
So he immediately sent an executioner to the prison to cut off John’s head and bring it to him. The soldier beheaded John in the prison, | 27And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, |
brought his head on a tray, and gave it to the girl, who took it to her mother. | 28And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. |
When John’s disciples heard what had happened, they came to get his body and buried it in a tomb. Jesus Feeds Five Thousand | 29And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb. |
The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. | 30And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. |
Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. | 31And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. |
So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone. | 32And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. |
But many people recognized them and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of them. | 33And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. |
Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. | 34And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. |
Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. | 35And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: |
Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.” | 36Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. |
But Jesus said, “You feed them.” “With what?” they asked. “We’d have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!” | 37He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? |
“How much bread do you have?” he asked. “Go and find out.” They came back and reported, “We have five loaves of bread and two fish.” | 38He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. |
Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down in groups on the green grass. | 39And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. |
So they sat down in groups of fifty or a hundred. | 40And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. |
Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share. | 41And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. |
They all ate as much as they wanted, | 42And they did all eat, and were filled. |
and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish. | 43And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. |
A total of 5,000 men and their families were fed. Jesus Walks on Water | 44And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. |
Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and head across the lake to Bethsaida, while he sent the people home. | 45And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. |
After telling everyone good-bye, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. | 46And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. |
Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land. | 47And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. |
He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them, | 48And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. |
but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. | 49But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: |
They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here! ” | 50For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. |
Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, | 51And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. |
for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in. | 52For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. |
After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret. They brought the boat to shore | 53And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. |
and climbed out. The people recognized Jesus at once, | 54And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, |
and they ran throughout the whole area, carrying sick people on mats to wherever they heard he was. | 55And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. |
Wherever he went—in villages, cities, or the countryside—they brought the sick out to the marketplaces. They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed. | 56And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole. |
