The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that the Israelites were approaching on the road through Atharim. So he attacked the Israelites and took some of them as prisoners. | 1When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the Atharim caravan route, he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. |
Then the people of Israel made this vow to the LORD: “If you will hand these people over to us, we will completely destroy all their towns.” | 2Then Israel made this vow in the LORD's presence: "If you give these people into our control, we intend to devote their cities to total destruction." |
The LORD heard the Israelites’ request and gave them victory over the Canaanites. The Israelites completely destroyed them and their towns, and the place has been called Hormah ever since. The Bronze Snake | 3When the LORD heard what Israel had decided to do, he delivered the Canaanites to them, and Israel exterminated them and their cities. They named the place Hormah. |
Then the people of Israel set out from Mount Hor, taking the road to the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom. But the people grew impatient with the long journey, | 4After this, they traveled from Mount Hor along the caravan route by way of the Sea of Reeds and went around the land of Edom. But when the people got impatient because it was a long route, |
and they began to speak against God and Moses. “Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die here in the wilderness?” they complained. “There is nothing to eat here and nothing to drink. And we hate this horrible manna!” | 5the people complained against the LORD and Moses. "Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?" they asked. "There's no food and water, and we're tired of this worthless bread." |
So the LORD sent poisonous snakes among the people, and many were bitten and died. | 6In response, the LORD sent poisonous serpents among the people to bite them. As a result, many people of Israel died. |
Then the people came to Moses and cried out, “We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take away the snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people. | 7Then the people approached Moses and admitted, "We've sinned by speaking against the LORD and you. Pray to the LORD, that he'll remove the serpents from us." So Moses prayed in behalf of the people. |
Then the LORD told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!” | 8Then the LORD instructed Moses, "Make a poisonous serpent out of brass and fasten it to a pole. Anyone who has been bitten and who looks at it will live." |
So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to a pole. Then anyone who was bitten by a snake could look at the bronze snake and be healed! Israel’s Journey to Moab | 9So Moses made a bronze serpent and fastened it to a pole. If a person who had been bitten by a poisonous serpent looked to the serpent, he lived. |
The Israelites traveled next to Oboth and camped there. | 10After this, the Israelis traveled and encamped at Oboth. |
Then they went on to Iye-abarim, in the wilderness on the eastern border of Moab. | 11Then they traveled from Oboth and encamped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness that is in the vicinity of Moab's eastern border. |
From there they traveled to the valley of Zered Brook and set up camp. | 12From there, they traveled and encamped in the valley of Zered. |
Then they moved out and camped on the far side of the Arnon River, in the wilderness adjacent to the territory of the Amorites. The Arnon is the boundary line between the Moabites and the Amorites. | 13Then they traveled to the other side of Arnon and camped in the wilderness that borders the territory of the Amorites. (Arnon borders Moab between Moab and the Amorites, |
For this reason The Book of the Wars of the LORD speaks of “the town of Waheb in the area of Suphah, and the ravines of the Arnon River, | 14which is why the Book of the Wars of the LORD reads, "Waheb and Suphah and the wadis of the Arnon, |
and the ravines that extend as far as the settlement of Ar on the border of Moab.” | 15and the slope of the valleys, that extends to the dwelling places of Ar and the borders of Moab.") |
From there the Israelites traveled to Beer, which is the well where the LORD said to Moses, “Assemble the people, and I will give them water.” | 16From there they traveled to the Well of Beer, where the LORD had instructed Moses, "Gather the people together and I'll give you water." |
There the Israelites sang this song: “Spring up, O well! Yes, sing its praises! | 17That's also where Israel sang this song: Rise up, well! Sing to it! |
Sing of this well, which princes dug, which great leaders hollowed out with their scepters and staffs.” Then the Israelites left the wilderness and proceeded on through Mattanah, | 18It's the well that the leaders dug, the one carved out by the nobles of the people with their scepters and staffs. Then they moved on in the wilderness from there to Mattanah, |
Nahaliel, and Bamoth. | 19then from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, |
After that they went to the valley in Moab where Pisgah Peak overlooks the wasteland. Victory over Sihon and Og | 20and from Bamoth to the valley of Moab where their fields are, and from there to the top of Mount Pisgah, that looks down toward the open desert. |
The Israelites sent ambassadors to King Sihon of the Amorites with this message: | 21Later, Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who conveyed this request: |
“Let us travel through your land. We will be careful not to go through your fields and vineyards. We won’t even drink water from your wells. We will stay on the king’s road until we have passed through your territory.” | 22"Permit us to pass through your land. We won't trespass in your fields or vineyards. We won't drink water from any well, and we'll only travel along the King's Highway until we've passed through your territory." |
But King Sihon refused to let them cross his territory. Instead, he mobilized his entire army and attacked Israel in the wilderness, engaging them in battle at Jahaz. | 23Instead of letting Israel pass through his territory, Sihon mustered his entire army and marched out to meet them in the wilderness. He arrived at Jahaz and attacked Israel. |
But the Israelites slaughtered them with their swords and occupied their land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River. They went only as far as the Ammonite border because the boundary of the Ammonites was fortified. | 24But Israel defeated him in battle and took possession of all his lands from Arnon to Jabbok, including the Ammonites, even though the border of the Ammonites was strong. |
So Israel captured all the towns of the Amorites and settled in them, including the city of Heshbon and its surrounding villages. | 25So Israel captured all of those cities, occupied all the Amorite cities in Heshbon, and all its towns. |
Heshbon had been the capital of King Sihon of the Amorites. He had defeated a former Moabite king and seized all his land as far as the Arnon River. | 26Heshbon was the capital city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who fought against the previous king of Moab and captured all his land from his capital city to Arnon. |
Therefore, the ancient poets wrote this about him: “Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt! Let the city of Sihon be restored. | 27Therefore the ones who speak in proverbs say: Come to Heshbon and let it be built! Let the city of Sihon be established! |
A fire flamed forth from Heshbon, a blaze from the city of Sihon. It burned the city of Ar in Moab; it destroyed the rulers of the Arnon heights. | 28A fire has gone out from Heshbon, and a flame from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab and the lords of the high places who lived in Arnon. |
What sorrow awaits you, O people of Moab! You are finished, O worshipers of Chemosh! Chemosh has left his sons as refugees, his daughters as captives of Sihon, the Amorite king. | 29Woe to you, Moab! You are destroyed, you people of Chemosh! He has given up his sons as fugitives and his daughters have gone into captivity to Sihon, king of the Amorites. |
We have utterly destroyed them, from Heshbon to Dibon. We have completely wiped them out as far away as Nophah and Medeba. ” | 30We've fired at them. Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. We've destroyed them as far as Nophah even as far as Medeba. |
So the people of Israel occupied the territory of the Amorites. | 31So Israel lived in Amorite territory. |
After Moses sent men to explore the Jazer area, they captured all the towns in the region and drove out the Amorites who lived there. | 32Then Moses sent out explorers to scout Jazer. They captured its towns and drove out the Amorites who were there. |
Then they turned and marched up the road to Bashan, but King Og of Bashan and all his people attacked them at Edrei. | 33Then they turned toward Bashan. However, Og, the king of Bashan, mustered his army and went out to attack them at Edrei. |
The LORD said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you, along with all his people and his land. Do the same to him as you did to King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.” | 34The LORD told Moses, "You are not to fear him, because I'm going to deliver him, his entire army, and his land into your control. Do to him just what you've done to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who used to live in Heshbon." |
And Israel killed King Og, his sons, and all his subjects; not a single survivor remained. Then Israel occupied their land. | 35So they attacked him, his sons, and his entire army, until there wasn't even a single survivor left. Then they took possession of his land. |
