New King James Version | NET Bible |
Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. | 1The heavens and the earth were completed with everything that was in them. |
And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. | 2By the seventh day God finished the work that he had been doing, and he ceased on the seventh day all the work that he had been doing. |
Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. | 3God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it he ceased all the work that he had been doing in creation. |
This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, | 4This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created--when the LORD God made the earth and heavens. |
before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; | 5Now no shrub of the field had yet grown on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. |
but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. | 6Springs would well up from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. |
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. | 7The LORD God formed the man from the soil of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. |
The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. | 8The LORD God planted an orchard in the east, in Eden; and there he placed the man he had formed. |
And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. | 9The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow from the soil, every tree that was pleasing to look at and good for food. (Now the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil were in the middle of the orchard.) |
Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads. | 10Now a river flows from Eden to water the orchard, and from there it divides into four headstreams. |
The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. | 11The name of the first is Pishon; it runs through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. |
And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. | 12(The gold of that land is pure; pearls and lapis lazuli are also there). |
The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. | 13The name of the second river is Gihon; it runs through the entire land of Cush. |
The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. | 14The name of the third river is Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. |
Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. | 15The LORD God took the man and placed him in the orchard in Eden to care for it and to maintain it. |
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; | 16Then the LORD God commanded the man, "You may freely eat fruit from every tree of the orchard, |
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” | 17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die." |
And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” | 18The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a companion for him who corresponds to him." |
Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. | 19The LORD God formed out of the ground every living animal of the field and every bird of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them, and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. |
So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. | 20So the man named all the animals, the birds of the air, and the living creatures of the field, but for Adam no companion who corresponded to him was found. |
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. | 21So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he was asleep, he took part of the man's side and closed up the place with flesh. |
Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. | 22Then the LORD God made a woman from the part he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. |
And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” | 23Then the man said, "This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." |
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. | 24That is why a man leaves his father and mother and unites with his wife, and they become a new family. |
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. | 25The man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed. |
