Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. | 1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. |
And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. | 2And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. |
Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. | 3So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. |
This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, | 4These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. |
before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; | 5When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, |
but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. | 6and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— |
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. | 7then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. |
The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. | 8And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. |
And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. | 9And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. |
Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads. | 10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. |
The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. | 11The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. |
And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. | 12And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. |
The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. | 13The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. |
The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. | 14And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. |
Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. | 15The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. |
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; | 16And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, |
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” | 17but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” |
And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” | 18Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” |
Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. | 19Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. |
So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. | 20The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. |
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. | 21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. |
Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. | 22And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. |
And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” | 23Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” |
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. | 24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. |
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. | 25And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. |
