| 3Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. | 3The person who eats any kind of food must not ridicule the person who does not eat them, and the person who does not eat certain foods must not criticize the person who eats them, for God has accepted him. |
| 4Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. | 4Who are you to criticize someone else's servant? He stands or falls before his own Lord—and stand he will, because the Lord makes him stand. |
| 5One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. | 5One person decides in favor of one day over another, while another person decides that all days are the same. Let each one be fully convinced in his own mind: |
| 6He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. The one who eats, eats to honor the Lord, since he gives thanks to God. And the one who does not eat, refrains from eating to honor the Lord; yet he, too, gives thanks to God. |

| 14I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. | 14I know—and have been persuaded by the Lord Jesus—that nothing is unclean in and of itself, but it is unclean to a person who thinks it is unclean. |
| 15Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died. | 15For if your brother is being hurt by what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not destroy the person for whom the Messiah died by what you eat. |
| 16Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; | 16Do not allow what seems good to you to be spoken of as evil. |
| 17for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. | 17For God's kingdom does not consist of food and drink, but of righteousness, peace, and joy produced by the Holy Spirit. |
| 18For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men. | 18For the person who serves the Messiah in this way is pleasing to God and approved by people. |
| 19Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. | 19Therefore, let's keep on pursuing those things that bring peace and that lead to building up one another. |
| 20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense. | 20Do not destroy God's action for the sake of food. Everything is clean, but it is wrong to make another person stumble because of what you eat. |
| 21It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak. | 21The right thing to do is to avoid eating meat, drinking wine, or doing anything else that makes your brother stumble, upset, or weak. |
| 22Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. | 22As for the faith you do have, have it as your own conviction before God. How blessed is the person who has no reason to condemn himself because of what he approves! |
| 23But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin. | 23But the person who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not act in faith; and anything that is not done in faith is sin. |
