| 1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? | 1What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? |
| 2Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? | 2Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? |
| 3Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? | 3Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? |

| 18And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. | 18and having been set free from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. |
| 19I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. | 19I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you offered the parts of yourselves as slaves to impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification. |
| 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. | 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness. |
| 21What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. | 21So what fruit was produced then from the things you are now ashamed of? The outcome of those things is death. |
| 22But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. | 22But now, since you have been set free from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification--and the outcome is eternal life! |
