| 1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, | 1So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. |
| 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. | 2And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. |
| 3For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, | 3The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. |
| 4in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. | 4He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit. |
| 5Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. | 5Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. |
| 6The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. | 6So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. |
| 7The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. | 7For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. |
| 8Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. | 8That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. |
| 9You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. | 9But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) |
| 10But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. | 10And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. |
| 11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. | 11The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. |
| 12Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation--but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. | 12Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. |
| 13For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. | 13For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. |
| 14For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. | 14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. |
| 15The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." | 15So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” |
| 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. | 16For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. |
| 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. | 17And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. The Future Glory |
| 18I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. | 18Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later. |
| 19For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. | 19For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. |
| 20For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope | 20Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, |
| 21that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. | 21the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. |
| 22We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. | 22For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. |
| 23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. | 23And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. |
| 24For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? | 24We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it. |
| 25But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. | 25But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.) |
| 26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. | 26And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. |
| 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God. | 27And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. |
| 28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. | 28And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. |
| 29For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. | 29For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. |
| 30And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. | 30And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. Nothing Can Separate Us from God’s Love |
| 31What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? | 31What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? |
| 32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all--how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? | 32Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? |
| 33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. | 33Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. |
| 34Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died--more than that, who was raised to life--is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. | 34Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. |
| 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? | 35Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? |
| 36As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." | 36(As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.” ) |
| 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. | 37No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. |
| 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, | 38And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. |
| 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. | 39No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. |
