| 4When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, "This man deserves to have you do this, | 4So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said, |

| 6So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. | 6So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor. |
| 7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. | 7I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. |
| 8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." | 8I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.” |

| 18John's disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, | 18The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples, |
| 19he sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?" | 19and he sent them to the Lord to ask him, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?” |

| 24After John's messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? | 24After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind? |
| 25If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. | 25 Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces. |
| 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. | 26 Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet. |
| 27This is the one about whom it is written: "'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' | 27 John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’ |
| 28I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." | 28 I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!” |
| 29(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus' words, acknowledged that God's way was right, because they had been baptized by John. | 29When they heard this, all the people—even the tax collectors—agreed that God’s way was right, for they had been baptized by John. |

| 31Jesus went on to say, "To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? | 31 “To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them? |
| 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: "'We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.' | 32 They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’ |
| 33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' | 33 For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’ |
| 34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' | 34 The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ |

| 36When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. | 36One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat. |
| 37A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. | 37When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. |
| 38As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. | 38Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them. |

| 43Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven." "You have judged correctly," Jesus said. | 43Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.” “That’s right,” Jesus said. |
| 44Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. | 44Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. |
| 45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. | 45 You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. |
| 46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. | 46 You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume. |
| 47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--as her great love has shown.
