For the director of music. To the tune of "The Doe of the Morning." A psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? | 1My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? |
My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. | 2O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. |
Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. | 3Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. |
In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. | 4In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. |
To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. | 5To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. |
But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. | 6But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. |
All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. | 7All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; |
"He trusts in the LORD," they say, "let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him." | 8“He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!” |
Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother's breast. | 9Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts. |
From birth I was cast on you; from my mother's womb you have been my God. | 10On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God. |
Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. | 11Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help. |
Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. | 12Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; |
Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me. | 13they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. |
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. | 14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; |
My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. | 15my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. |
Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. | 16For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— |
All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. | 17I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; |
They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. | 18they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. |
But you, LORD, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me. | 19But you, O LORD, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid! |
Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. | 20Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog! |
Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen. | 21Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen! |
I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. | 22I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: |
You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! | 23You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! |
For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. | 24For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him. |
From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows. | 25From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. |
The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him-- may your hearts live forever! | 26The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live forever! |
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, | 27All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. |
for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations. | 28For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations. |
All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him-- those who cannot keep themselves alive. | 29All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive. |
Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. | 30Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; |
They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it! | 31they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. |
