This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: | 1The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: |
"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you. | 2“Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you. |
The days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity and restore them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess,' says the LORD." | 3For behold, days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will restore the fortunes of my people, Israel and Judah, says the LORD, and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall take possession of it.” |
These are the words the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah: | 4These are the words that the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah: |
"This is what the LORD says: "'Cries of fear are heard-- terror, not peace. | 5“Thus says the LORD: We have heard a cry of panic, of terror, and no peace. |
Ask and see: Can a man bear children? Then why do I see every strong man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor, every face turned deathly pale? | 6Ask now, and see, can a man bear a child? Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor? Why has every face turned pale? |
How awful that day will be! No other will be like it. It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it. | 7Alas! That day is so great there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob; yet he shall be saved out of it. |
"'In that day,' declares the LORD Almighty, 'I will break the yoke off their necks and will tear off their bonds; no longer will foreigners enslave them. | 8“And it shall come to pass in that day, declares the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off your neck, and I will burst your bonds, and foreigners shall no more make a servant of him. |
Instead, they will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them. | 9But they shall serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them. |
"'So do not be afraid, Jacob my servant; do not be dismayed, Israel,' declares the LORD. 'I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their exile. Jacob will again have peace and security, and no one will make him afraid. | 10“Then fear not, O Jacob my servant, declares the LORD, nor be dismayed, O Israel; for behold, I will save you from far away, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease, and none shall make him afraid. |
I am with you and will save you,' declares the LORD. 'Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you but only in due measure; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.' | 11For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD; I will make a full end of all the nations among whom I scattered you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished. |
"This is what the LORD says: "'Your wound is incurable, your injury beyond healing. | 12“For thus says the LORD: Your hurt is incurable, and your wound is grievous. |
There is no one to plead your cause, no remedy for your sore, no healing for you. | 13There is none to uphold your cause, no medicine for your wound, no healing for you. |
All your allies have forgotten you; they care nothing for you. I have struck you as an enemy would and punished you as would the cruel, because your guilt is so great and your sins so many. | 14All your lovers have forgotten you; they care nothing for you; for I have dealt you the blow of an enemy, the punishment of a merciless foe, because your guilt is great, because your sins are flagrant. |
Why do you cry out over your wound, your pain that has no cure? Because of your great guilt and many sins I have done these things to you. | 15Why do you cry out over your hurt? Your pain is incurable. Because your guilt is great, because your sins are flagrant, I have done these things to you. |
"'But all who devour you will be devoured; all your enemies will go into exile. Those who plunder you will be plundered; all who make spoil of you I will despoil. | 16Therefore all who devour you shall be devoured, and all your foes, every one of them, shall go into captivity; those who plunder you shall be plundered, and all who prey on you I will make a prey. |
But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,' declares the LORD, 'because you are called an outcast, Zion for whom no one cares.' | 17For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the LORD, because they have called you an outcast: ‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’ |
"This is what the LORD says: "'I will restore the fortunes of Jacob's tents and have compassion on his dwellings; the city will be rebuilt on her ruins, and the palace will stand in its proper place. | 18“Thus says the LORD: Behold, I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob and have compassion on his dwellings; the city shall be rebuilt on its mound, and the palace shall stand where it used to be. |
From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained. | 19Out of them shall come songs of thanksgiving, and the voices of those who celebrate. I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will make them honored, and they shall not be small. |
Their children will be as in days of old, and their community will be established before me; I will punish all who oppress them. | 20Their children shall be as they were of old, and their congregation shall be established before me, and I will punish all who oppress them. |
Their leader will be one of their own; their ruler will arise from among them. I will bring him near and he will come close to me-- for who is he who will devote himself to be close to me?' declares the LORD. | 21Their prince shall be one of themselves; their ruler shall come out from their midst; I will make him draw near, and he shall approach me, for who would dare of himself to approach me? declares the LORD. |
"'So you will be my people, and I will be your God.'" | 22And you shall be my people, and I will be your God.” |
See, the storm of the LORD will burst out in wrath, a driving wind swirling down on the heads of the wicked. | 23Behold the storm of the LORD! Wrath has gone forth, a whirling tempest; it will burst upon the head of the wicked. |
The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand this. | 24The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back until he has executed and accomplished the intentions of his mind. In the latter days you will understand this. |
