| 1The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, | 1While the Israelites were still in the land of Egypt, the LORD gave the following instructions to Moses and Aaron: |
| 2"This month is to be your beginning of months; it will be your first month of the year. | 2“From now on, this month will be the first month of the year for you. |
| 3Tell the whole community of Israel, 'In the tenth day of this month they each must take a lamb for themselves according to their families--a lamb for each household. | 3Announce to the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each family must choose a lamb or a young goat for a sacrifice, one animal for each household. |
| 4If any household is too small for a lamb, the man and his next-door neighbor are to take a lamb according to the number of people--you will make your count for the lamb according to how much each one can eat. | 4If a family is too small to eat a whole animal, let them share with another family in the neighborhood. Divide the animal according to the size of each family and how much they can eat. |
| 5Your lamb must be perfect, a male, one year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. | 5The animal you select must be a one-year-old male, either a sheep or a goat, with no defects. |
| 6You must care for it until the fourteenth day of this month, and then the whole community of Israel will kill it around sundown. | 6“Take special care of this chosen animal until the evening of the fourteenth day of this first month. Then the whole assembly of the community of Israel must slaughter their lamb or young goat at twilight. |
| 7They will take some of the blood and put it on the two side posts and top of the doorframe of the houses where they will eat it. | 7They are to take some of the blood and smear it on the sides and top of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the animal. |
| 8They will eat the meat the same night; they will eat it roasted over the fire with bread made without yeast and with bitter herbs. | 8That same night they must roast the meat over a fire and eat it along with bitter salad greens and bread made without yeast. |
| 9Do not eat it raw or boiled in water, but roast it over the fire with its head, its legs, and its entrails. | 9Do not eat any of the meat raw or boiled in water. The whole animal—including the head, legs, and internal organs—must be roasted over a fire. |
| 10You must leave nothing until morning, but you must burn with fire whatever remains of it until morning. | 10Do not leave any of it until the next morning. Burn whatever is not eaten before morning. |
| 11This is how you are to eat it--dressed to travel, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. You are to eat it in haste. It is the LORD's Passover. | 11“These are your instructions for eating this meal: Be fully dressed, wear your sandals, and carry your walking stick in your hand. Eat the meal with urgency, for this is the LORD’s Passover. |
| 12I will pass through the land of Egypt in the same night, and I will attack all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both of humans and of animals, and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment. I am the LORD. | 12On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn son and firstborn male animal in the land of Egypt. I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt, for I am the LORD! |
| 13The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, so that when I see the blood I will pass over you, and this plague will not fall on you to destroy you when I attack the land of Egypt. | 13But the blood on your doorposts will serve as a sign, marking the houses where you are staying. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. This plague of death will not touch you when I strike the land of Egypt. |
| 14This day will become a memorial for you, and you will celebrate it as a festival to the LORD--you will celebrate it perpetually as a lasting ordinance. | 14“This is a day to remember. Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the LORD. This is a law for all time. |
| 15For seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. Surely on the first day you must put away yeast from your houses because anyone who eats bread made with yeast from the first day to the seventh day will be cut off from Israel. | 15For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast. On the first day of the festival, remove every trace of yeast from your homes. Anyone who eats bread made with yeast during the seven days of the festival will be cut off from the community of Israel. |
| 16On the first day there will be a holy convocation, and on the seventh day there will be a holy convocation for you. You must do no work of any kind on them, only what every person will eat--that alone may be prepared for you. | 16On the first day of the festival and again on the seventh day, all the people must observe an official day for holy assembly. No work of any kind may be done on these days except in the preparation of food. |
| 17So you will keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because on this very day I brought your regiments out from the land of Egypt, and so you must keep this day perpetually as a lasting ordinance. | 17“Celebrate this Festival of Unleavened Bread, for it will remind you that I brought your forces out of the land of Egypt on this very day. This festival will be a permanent law for you; celebrate this day from generation to generation. |
| 18In the first month, from the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, you will eat bread made without yeast until the twenty-first day of the month in the evening. | 18The bread you eat must be made without yeast from the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month until the evening of the twenty-first day of that month. |
| 19For seven days yeast must not be found in your houses, for whoever eats what is made with yeast--that person will be cut off from the community of Israel, whether a foreigner or one born in the land. | 19During those seven days, there must be no trace of yeast in your homes. Anyone who eats anything made with yeast during this week will be cut off from the community of Israel. These regulations apply both to the foreigners living among you and to the native-born Israelites. |
| 20You will not eat anything made with yeast; in all the places where you live you must eat bread made without yeast.'" | 20During those days you must not eat anything made with yeast. Wherever you live, eat only bread made without yeast.” |
| 21Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel, and told them, "Go and select for yourselves a lamb or young goat for your families, and kill the Passover animals. | 21Then Moses called all the elders of Israel together and said to them, “Go, pick out a lamb or young goat for each of your families, and slaughter the Passover animal. |
| 22Take a branch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and apply to the top of the doorframe and the two side posts some of the blood that is in the basin. Not one of you is to go out the door of his house until morning. | 22Drain the blood into a basin. Then take a bundle of hyssop branches and dip it into the blood. Brush the hyssop across the top and sides of the doorframes of your houses. And no one may go out through the door until morning. |
| 23For the LORD will pass through to strike Egypt, and when he sees the blood on the top of the doorframe and the two side posts, then the LORD will pass over the door, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you. | 23For the LORD will pass through the land to strike down the Egyptians. But when he sees the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, the LORD will pass over your home. He will not permit his death angel to enter your house and strike you down. |
| 24You must observe this event as an ordinance for you and for your children forever. | 24“Remember, these instructions are a permanent law that you and your descendants must observe forever. |
| 25When you enter the land that the LORD will give to you, just as he said, you must observe this ceremony. | 25When you enter the land the LORD has promised to give you, you will continue to observe this ceremony. |
| 26When your children ask you, 'What does this ceremony mean to you?'-- | 26Then your children will ask, ‘What does this ceremony mean?’ |
| 27then you will say, 'It is the sacrifice of the LORD's Passover, when he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt, when he struck Egypt and delivered our households.'" The people bowed down low to the ground, | 27And you will reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. And though he struck the Egyptians, he spared our families.’” When Moses had finished speaking, all the people bowed down to the ground and worshiped. |
| 28and the Israelites went away and did exactly as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron. | 28So the people of Israel did just as the LORD had commanded through Moses and Aaron. |
| 29It happened at midnight--the LORD attacked all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the prison, and all the firstborn of the cattle. | 29And that night at midnight, the LORD struck down all the firstborn sons in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sat on his throne, to the firstborn son of the prisoner in the dungeon. Even the firstborn of their livestock were killed. |
| 30Pharaoh got up in the night, along with all his servants and all Egypt, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no house in which there was not someone dead. | 30Pharaoh and all his officials and all the people of Egypt woke up during the night, and loud wailing was heard throughout the land of Egypt. | 31Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron in the night and said, "Get up, get out from among my people, both you and the Israelites! Go, serve the LORD as you have requested! | 31Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron during the night. “Get out!” he ordered. “Leave my people—and take the rest of the Israelites with you! Go and worship the LORD as you have requested. |
| 32Also, take your flocks and your herds, just as you have requested, and leave. But bless me also." | 32Take your flocks and herds, as you said, and be gone. Go, but bless me as you leave.” |
| 33The Egyptians were urging the people on, in order to send them out of the land quickly, for they were saying, "We are all dead!" | 33All the Egyptians urged the people of Israel to get out of the land as quickly as possible, for they thought, “We will all die!” |
| 34So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, with their kneading troughs bound up in their clothing on their shoulders. | 34The Israelites took their bread dough before yeast was added. They wrapped their kneading boards in their cloaks and carried them on their shoulders. |
| 35Now the Israelites had done as Moses told them--they had requested from the Egyptians silver and gold items and clothing. | 35And the people of Israel did as Moses had instructed; they asked the Egyptians for clothing and articles of silver and gold. |
| 36The LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, and they gave them whatever they wanted, and so they plundered Egypt. | 36The LORD caused the Egyptians to look favorably on the Israelites, and they gave the Israelites whatever they asked for. So they stripped the Egyptians of their wealth! |
| 37The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about 600,000 men on foot, plus their dependants. | 37That night the people of Israel left Rameses and started for Succoth. There were about 600,000 men, plus all the women and children. |
| 38A mixed multitude also went up with them, and flocks and herds--a very large number of cattle. | 38A rabble of non-Israelites went with them, along with great flocks and herds of livestock. |
| 39They baked cakes of bread without yeast using the dough they had brought from Egypt, for it was made without yeast--because they were thrust out of Egypt and were not able to delay, they could not prepare food for themselves either. | 39For bread they baked flat cakes from the dough without yeast they had brought from Egypt. It was made without yeast because the people were driven out of Egypt in such a hurry that they had no time to prepare the bread or other food. |
| 40Now the length of time the Israelites lived in Egypt was 430 years. | 40The people of Israel had lived in Egypt for 430 years. |
| 41At the end of the 430 years, on the very day, all the regiments of the LORD went out of the land of Egypt. | 41In fact, it was on the last day of the 430th year that all the LORD’s forces left the land. |
| 42It was a night of vigil for the LORD to bring them out from the land of Egypt, and so on this night all Israel is to keep the vigil to the LORD for generations to come. | 42On this night the LORD kept his promise to bring his people out of the land of Egypt. So this night belongs to him, and it must be commemorated every year by all the Israelites, from generation to generation. Instructions for the Passover |
| 43The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "This is the ordinance of the Passover. No foreigner may share in eating it. | 43Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “These are the instructions for the festival of Passover. No outsiders are allowed to eat the Passover meal. |
| 44But everyone's servant who is bought for money, after you have circumcised him, may eat it. | 44But any slave who has been purchased may eat it if he has been circumcised. |
| 45A foreigner and a hired worker must not eat it. | 45Temporary residents and hired servants may not eat it. |
| 46It must be eaten in one house; you must not bring any of the meat outside the house, and you must not break a bone of it. | 46Each Passover lamb must be eaten in one house. Do not carry any of its meat outside, and do not break any of its bones. |
| 47The whole community of Israel must observe it. | 47The whole community of Israel must celebrate this Passover festival. |
| 48"When a foreigner lives with you and wants to observe the Passover to the LORD, all his males must be circumcised, and then he may approach and observe it, and he will be like one who is born in the land--but no uncircumcised person may eat of it. | 48“If there are foreigners living among you who want to celebrate the LORD’s Passover, let all their males be circumcised. Only then may they celebrate the Passover with you like any native-born Israelite. But no uncircumcised male may ever eat the Passover meal. |
| 49The same law will apply to the person who is native-born and to the foreigner who lives among you." | 49This instruction applies to everyone, whether a native-born Israelite or a foreigner living among you.” |
| 50So all the Israelites did exactly as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. | 50So all the people of Israel followed all the LORD’s commands to Moses and Aaron. |
| 51And on this very day the LORD brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by their regiments. | 51On that very day the LORD brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt like an army. |
