In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God.1In the beginning, the Word existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The Word was with God in the beginning.2He existed in the beginning with God.
All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.3Through him all things were made, and apart from him nothing was made that has been made.
In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind.4In him was life, and that life brought light to humanity.
And the light shines on in the darkness, but the darkness has not mastered it. 5And the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.
A man came, sent from God, whose name was John.6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that everyone might believe through him.7He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe because of him.
He himself was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.8John was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.
The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.9This was the true light that enlightens every person by his coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was created by him, but the world did not recognize him.10He was in the world, and the world was made through him. Yet the world did not recognize him.
He came to what was his own, but his own people did not receive him.11He came to his own creation, yet his own people did not receive him.
But to all who have received him--those who believe in his name--he has given the right to become God's children12However, to all who received him, those believing in his name, he gave authority to become God's children,
--children not born by human parents or by human desire or a husband's decision, but by God. 13who were born, not merely in a genetic sense, nor from lust, nor from man's desire, but from the will of God.
Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory--the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father.14The Word became flesh and lived among us. We gazed on his glory, the kind of glory that belongs to the Father's unique Son, who is full of grace and truth.
John testified about him and shouted out, "This one was the one about whom I said, 'He who comes after me is greater than I am, because he existed before me.'"15John told the truth about him when he cried out, "This is the person about whom I said, 'The one who comes after me ranks higher than me, because he existed before me.'"
For we have all received from his fullness one gracious gift after another.16We have all received one gracious gift after another from his abundance,
For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ.17because while the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus the Messiah.
No one has ever seen God. The only one, himself God, who is in closest fellowship with the Father, has made God known. 18No one has ever seen God. The unique God, who is close to the Father's side, has revealed him.
Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"19This was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and descendants of Levi to him from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
He confessed--he did not deny but confessed--"I am not the Christ!"20He spoke openly and, remaining true to himself, admitted, "I am not the Messiah."
So they asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not!" "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No!"21So they asked him, "Well then, are you Elijah?" John said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
Then they said to him, "Who are you? Tell us so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 22"Who are you?" they asked him. "We must give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
John said, "I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way for the Lord,' as Isaiah the prophet said."23He replied, "I am '…a voice crying out in the wilderness, "Prepare the Lord's highway,"' as the prophet Isaiah said."
(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)24Now those men had been sent from the Pharisees.
So they asked John, "Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" 25They asked him, "Why, then, are you baptizing if you are not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?"
John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize,26John answered them, "I am baptizing with water, but among you stands a man whom you do not know,
who is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal!"27the one who is coming after me, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie."
These things happened in Bethany across the Jordan River where John was baptizing. 28This happened in Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!29The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
This is the one about whom I said, 'After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.'30This is the one about whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks above me, because he existed before me.'
I did not recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he could be revealed to Israel." 31I didn't recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel."
Then John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.32John also testified, "I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.
And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining--this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'33I didn't recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The person on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God." 34I have seen this and have testified that this is the Son of God."
Again the next day John was standing there with two of his disciples.35The next day, John was standing there again with two of his disciples.
Gazing at Jesus as he walked by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"36As he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"
When John's two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.37When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
Jesus turned around and saw them following and said to them, "What do you want?" So they said to him, "Rabbi" (which is translated Teacher), "where are you staying?"38But when Jesus turned around and saw them following, he asked them, "What are you looking for?" They asked him, "Rabbi," (which is translated "Teacher"), "where are you staying?"
Jesus answered, "Come and you will see." So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about four o'clock in the afternoon. 39He told them, "Come and see!" So they went and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed Jesus.40Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.
He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is translated Christ).41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and say to him, "We have found the Anointed One!" (which is translated "Messiah").
Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter). 42He led Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him intently and said, "You are Simon, John's son. You will be called Cephas!" (which is translated "Peter").
On the next day Jesus wanted to set out for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."43The next day, Jesus decided to go away to Galilee, where he found Philip and told him, "Follow me."
(Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.)44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.
Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."45Philip found Nathaniel and told him, "We have found the man about whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets wrote—Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
Nathanael replied, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip replied, "Come and see." 46Nathaniel asked him, "From Nazareth? Can anything good come from there?" Philip told him, "Come and see!"
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed, "Look, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!"47Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward him and said about him, "Look, a genuine Israeli, in whom there is no deceit!"
Nathanael asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus replied, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."48Nathaniel asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel!"49Nathaniel replied to him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"
Jesus said to him, "Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these."50Jesus told him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that."
He continued, "I tell all of you the solemn truth--you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." 51Then he told him, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you will see heaven standing open and the angels of God going up and coming down to the Son of Man."
