| 1Now the people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of the LORD; and when the LORD heard it, His anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. | 1Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. |
| 2The people therefore cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the LORD and the fire died out. | 2When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the LORD and the fire died down. |
| 3So the name of that place was called Taberah, because the fire of the LORD burned among them. | 3So that place was called Taberah, because fire from the LORD had burned among them. |
| 4The rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, "Who will give us meat to eat? | 4The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, "If only we had meat to eat! |
| 5"We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, | 5We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost--also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. |
| 6but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna." | 6But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!" |
| 7Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium. | 7The manna was like coriander seed and looked like resin. |
| 8The people would go about and gather it and grind it between two millstones or beat it in the mortar, and boil it in the pot and make cakes with it; and its taste was as the taste of cakes baked with oil. | 8The people went around gathering it, and then ground it in a hand mill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into loaves. And it tasted like something made with olive oil. |
| 9When the dew fell on the camp at night, the manna would fall with it. | 9When the dew settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down. |
| 10Now Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, each man at the doorway of his tent; and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly, and Moses was displeased. | 10Moses heard the people of every family wailing at the entrance to their tents. The LORD became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. |
| 11So Moses said to the LORD, "Why have You been so hard on Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have laid the burden of all this people on me? | 11He asked the LORD, "Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me? |
| 12"Was it I who conceived all this people? Was it I who brought them forth, that You should say to me, 'Carry them in your bosom as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which You swore to their fathers '? | 12Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their ancestors? |
| 13"Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me, saying, 'Give us meat that we may eat!' | 13Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, 'Give us meat to eat!' |
| 14"I alone am not able to carry all this people, because it is too burdensome for me. | 14I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. |
| 15"So if You are going to deal thus with me, please kill me at once, if I have found favor in Your sight, and do not let me see my wretchedness." | 15If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me--if I have found favor in your eyes--and do not let me face my own ruin." |
| 16The LORD therefore said to Moses, "Gather for Me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and their officers and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. | 16The LORD said to Moses: "Bring me seventy of Israel's elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with you. |
| 17"Then I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit who is upon you, and will put Him upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you will not bear it all alone. | 17I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them. They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone. |
| 18"Say to the people, 'Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, "Oh that someone would give us meat to eat! For we were well-off in Egypt." Therefore the LORD will give you meat and you shall eat. | 18"Tell the people: 'Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The LORD heard you when you wailed, "If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!" Now the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat it. |
| 19'You shall eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, | 19You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, |
| 20but a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you; because you have rejected the LORD who is among you and have wept before Him, saying, "Why did we ever leave Egypt?"'" | 20but for a whole month--until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it--because you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, "Why did we ever leave Egypt?"'" |
| 21But Moses said, "The people, among whom I am, are 600,000 on foot; yet You have said, 'I will give them meat, so that they may eat for a whole month.' | 21But Moses said, "Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, 'I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!' |
| 22"Should flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to be sufficient for them? Or should all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to be sufficient for them?" | 22Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?" |
| 23The LORD said to Moses, "Is the LORD'S power limited? Now you shall see whether My word will come true for you or not." | 23The LORD answered Moses, "Is the LORD's arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you." |
| 24So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD. Also, he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and stationed them around the tent. | 24So Moses went out and told the people what the LORD had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. |
| 25Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took of the Spirit who was upon him and placed Him upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do it again. | 25Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied--but did not do so again. |
| 26But two men had remained in the camp; the name of one was Eldad and the name of the other Medad. And the Spirit rested upon them (now they were among those who had been registered, but had not gone out to the tent), and they prophesied in the camp. | 26However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. |
| 27So a young man ran and told Moses and said, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." | 27A young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." |
| 28Then Joshua the son of Nun, the attendant of Moses from his youth, said, "Moses, my lord, restrain them." | 28Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' aide since youth, spoke up and said, "Moses, my lord, stop them!" |
| 29But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD'S people were prophets, that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!" | 29But Moses replied, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD's people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!" |
| 30Then Moses returned to the camp, both he and the elders of Israel. | 30Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. |
| 31Now there went forth a wind from the LORD and it brought quail from the sea, and let them fall beside the camp, about a day's journey on this side and a day's journey on the other side, all around the camp and about two cubits deep on the surface of the ground. | 31Now a wind went out from the LORD and drove quail in from the sea. It scattered them up to two cubits deep all around the camp, as far as a day's walk in any direction. |
| 32The people spent all day and all night and all the next day, and gathered the quail (he who gathered least gathered ten homers) and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. | 32All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers. Then they spread them out all around the camp. |
| 33While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very severe plague. | 33But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it could be consumed, the anger of the LORD burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague. |
| 34So the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had been greedy. | 34Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved other food. |
| 35From Kibroth-hattaavah the people set out for Hazeroth, and they remained at Hazeroth. | 35From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth and stayed there. |
