The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, | 1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: |
"Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Write all the words which I have spoken to you in a book. | 2"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you. |
'For behold, days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will restore the fortunes of My people Israel and Judah.' The LORD says, 'I will also bring them back to the land that I gave to their forefathers and they shall possess it.'" | 3The days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity and restore them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess,' says the LORD." |
Now these are the words which the LORD spoke concerning Israel and concerning Judah: | 4These are the words the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah: |
"For thus says the LORD, 'I have heard a sound of terror, Of dread, and there is no peace. | 5"This is what the LORD says: "'Cries of fear are heard-- terror, not peace. |
Ask now, and see If a male can give birth. Why do I see every man With his hands on his loins, as a woman in childbirth? And why have all faces turned pale? | 6Ask and see: Can a man bear children? Then why do I see every strong man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor, every face turned deathly pale? |
'Alas! for that day is great, There is none like it; And it is the time of Jacob's distress, But he will be saved from it. | 7How awful that day will be! No other will be like it. It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it. |
'It shall come about on that day,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'that I will break his yoke from off their neck and will tear off their bonds; and strangers will no longer make them their slaves. | 8"'In that day,' declares the LORD Almighty, 'I will break the yoke off their necks and will tear off their bonds; no longer will foreigners enslave them. |
'But they shall serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them. | 9Instead, they will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them. |
'Fear not, O Jacob My servant,' declares the LORD, 'And do not be dismayed, O Israel; For behold, I will save you from afar And your offspring from the land of their captivity. And Jacob will return and will be quiet and at ease, And no one will make him afraid. | 10"'So do not be afraid, Jacob my servant; do not be dismayed, Israel,' declares the LORD. 'I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their exile. Jacob will again have peace and security, and no one will make him afraid. |
'For I am with you,' declares the LORD, 'to save you; For I will destroy completely all the nations where I have scattered you, Only I will not destroy you completely. But I will chasten you justly And will by no means leave you unpunished.' | 11I am with you and will save you,' declares the LORD. 'Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you but only in due measure; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.' |
"For thus says the LORD, 'Your wound is incurable And your injury is serious. | 12"This is what the LORD says: "'Your wound is incurable, your injury beyond healing. |
There is no one to plead your cause; No healing for your sore, No recovery for you. | 13There is no one to plead your cause, no remedy for your sore, no healing for you. |
All your lovers have forgotten you, They do not seek you; For I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, With the punishment of a cruel one, Because your iniquity is great And your sins are numerous. | 14All your allies have forgotten you; they care nothing for you. I have struck you as an enemy would and punished you as would the cruel, because your guilt is so great and your sins so many. |
Why do you cry out over your injury? Your pain is incurable. Because your iniquity is great And your sins are numerous, I have done these things to you. | 15Why do you cry out over your wound, your pain that has no cure? Because of your great guilt and many sins I have done these things to you. |
'Therefore all who devour you will be devoured; And all your adversaries, every one of them, will go into captivity; And those who plunder you will be for plunder, And all who prey upon you I will give for prey. | 16"'But all who devour you will be devoured; all your enemies will go into exile. Those who plunder you will be plundered; all who make spoil of you I will despoil. |
'For I will restore you to health And I will heal you of your wounds,' declares the LORD, 'Because they have called you an outcast, saying: "It is Zion; no one cares for her."' | 17But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,' declares the LORD, 'because you are called an outcast, Zion for whom no one cares.' |
"Thus says the LORD, 'Behold, I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob And have compassion on his dwelling places; And the city will be rebuilt on its ruin, And the palace will stand on its rightful place. | 18"This is what the LORD says: "'I will restore the fortunes of Jacob's tents and have compassion on his dwellings; the city will be rebuilt on her ruins, and the palace will stand in its proper place. |
'From them will proceed thanksgiving And the voice of those who celebrate; And I will multiply them and they will not be diminished; I will also honor them and they will not be insignificant. | 19From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained. |
'Their children also will be as formerly, And their congregation shall be established before Me; And I will punish all their oppressors. | 20Their children will be as in days of old, and their community will be established before me; I will punish all who oppress them. |
'Their leader shall be one of them, And their ruler shall come forth from their midst; And I will bring him near and he shall approach Me; For who would dare to risk his life to approach Me?' declares the LORD. | 21Their leader will be one of their own; their ruler will arise from among them. I will bring him near and he will come close to me-- for who is he who will devote himself to be close to me?' declares the LORD. |
'You shall be My people, And I will be your God.'" | 22"'So you will be my people, and I will be your God.'" |
Behold, the tempest of the LORD! Wrath has gone forth, A sweeping tempest; It will burst on the head of the wicked. | 23See, the storm of the LORD will burst out in wrath, a driving wind swirling down on the heads of the wicked. |
The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back Until He has performed and until He has accomplished The intent of His heart; In the latter days you will understand this. | 24The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand this. |
