New American Standard Bible 1995 | Berean Study Bible |
When Israel was a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son. | 1When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son. |
The more they called them, The more they went from them; They kept sacrificing to the Baals And burning incense to idols. | 2But the more I called Israel, the farther they departed from Me. They sacrificed to the Baals and burned incense to carved images. |
Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them in My arms; But they did not know that I healed them. | 3It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them in My arms, but they never realized that it was I who healed them. |
I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love, And I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws; And I bent down and fed them. | 4I led them with cords of kindness, with ropes of love; I lifted the yoke from their necks and bent down to feed them. |
They will not return to the land of Egypt; But Assyria-- he will be their king Because they refused to return to Me. | 5Will they not return to the land of Egypt and be ruled by Assyria because they refused to repent? |
The sword will whirl against their cities, And will demolish their gate bars And consume them because of their counsels. | 6A sword will flash through their cities; it will destroy the bars of their gates and consume them in their own plans. |
So My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call them to the One on high, None at all exalts Him. | 7My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call to the Most High, He will by no means exalt them. |
How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I surrender you, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned over within Me, All My compassions are kindled. | 8How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender you, O Israel? How could I make you like Admah? How could I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within Me; My compassion is stirred! |
I will not execute My fierce anger; I will not destroy Ephraim again. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst, And I will not come in wrath. | 9I will not execute the full fury of My anger; I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim. For I am God and not man—the Holy One among you—and I will not come in wrath. |
They will walk after the LORD, He will roar like a lion; Indeed He will roar And His sons will come trembling from the west. | 10They will walk after the LORD; He will roar like a lion. When He roars, His children will come trembling from the west. |
They will come trembling like birds from Egypt And like doves from the land of Assyria; And I will settle them in their houses, declares the LORD. | 11They will come trembling like birds from Egypt and like doves from the land of Assyria. Then I will settle them in their homes, declares the LORD. |
Ephraim surrounds Me with lies And the house of Israel with deceit; Judah is also unruly against God, Even against the Holy One who is faithful. | 12Ephraim surrounds Me with lies, the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah still walks with God and is faithful to the Holy One. |
